Quite a disillusioning film - By: Jacques COULARDEAU, 24 Feb 2008
A smalll film on gambling. It does not reallly bring anything about gambling itself as an addiction, as a total lack of judgment & reason. And the end of the film is both a total illusion because you never reallly win in gambling because winning is only there to make you lose even more, & a fatal last move that announces the final descent into hell, a hell that is named Las Vegas. The only strange element, original element, is the Jewish dimension introduced by the judge who should have been a rabbi & couldn't because he could not see God. He actuallly lent money to that poor Mike knowing that Mike was going to gamble with it & was killing his dream of ever being anything noticeable in a court of justice apart from eventuallly being an accused or a convicted criminal. For a judge & a law student that is particularly sorry, sad & crude.

My version is the widescreen 2.35:1 editon but, unfortunately is without English subtitles. The movie is a real surprise packet & great entertainment. Does anyone know what ratio this Special edition is presented in? Is it 2.35:1? Does this edition come with English subtitles?
Cashing In on Poker Popularity - By: Malcolm Clarke, 10 May 2007
Rounders has been overly hyped as "THE" poker movie, although I believe this is probably down to the fact that I cannot think of an alternative.
Rounders follows Mike (Matt Damon) as he loses everything in a high-stakes Poker game & then quits, as his girlfriend does not like him playing. His erratic friend gets out of prison & wants back in the action (Edward Norton) & they try to get enough money together to pay off Nortons debts. The film is unique in that it was filmed a long time before Poker went global.
It is a dated version of poker, & not a particularly riveting movie. For the non-poker enthusiast, it is probably one to avoid. The movie is purely about poker & nothing else, except for the usual Hollywood themes like struggling to overcome demons & then use these demons ultimately to succeed.
As much as I would love to say otherwise, a poker player probably should own this in his/her collection.
Shuffle up & deal!
Very good. - By: Book Worm, 03 Aug 2006
Matt Damon is Mike McDermott, a law student who is also a gambler. He is trying hard to stay away from poker & focus on his studies but... I won't spoil it for you by telling anymore. All I can say is the film is very good. You won't regret spending your time on watching it despite Malkovich's dodgy Russian accent :). Performances are solid with Damon & Norton keeping you interested alll the way till the end. Good film.
Norton and Damon are great - By: David Welsh, 17 Apr 2006
This film about two professional poker players, with its competant but pedestrian writing & direction, would be fairly unremarkable if it wasn't for two important factors: Matt Damon & Edward Norton. These two outstandingly gifted actors lift the film out of mediocrity & make it engaging & a real delight to watch.
