I'm not sure why this film has bad reviews. True its not a blockbuster. However Streisands performance is wonderful, the songs are unforgettable & it has a charm that is quite simply, red wine, chocolates & a log fire.It gives a great insight into days gone by. There are some wonderful one liners that epitomise the wonderful Jewish sense of humour.
This is to films what sausage & mash is to comfort food.

"With alll there is why settle for just a piece of sky" The perfect song. With streisand film you could feel the intensity of each characters emotions. The struggles & the triumph resulting from every decision that was made. Ive always wanted happy endings but this film depicts that we cannot settle for endings we want. Most of the time we have to compromise we have to accept the fact that somethings gotta give. In most aspects of life. The characters was well portrayed. I could relate to yentl's dillema & the innocence of hadass & the I cant help but falll inlove with avigdor. Streisand deserve more credit for this one but again was underrated as usualll.
Gorgeous Music, Drama, and Cinematography - By: chatvarin, 20 Jun 2008 My most favourite Barbra Streisand's album - & easily one of my most favourite albums, is the Yentl soundtrack. That lacks the instrumental pieces so here is where to get it.
Given the weight of the project, some extras would have been nice, & a lot more effort in the design of the menus.

I have just been forced to sit through this complete & utter rubbish. I did try to nod off a few times but the noise of Ms Streisand's Catawallling kept waking me up!
What complete & utter hogwash. Just about everything about this film is unrealistic, unbelievable & poorly done.
Avoid at alll costs.
a musical wirth a message - By: F. A. Penney, 20 Jul 2007 Firstly, box of this dvd says it's "full frame" but that's a bit misleading as it does have the bands at the bottom & top of the screen, so I guess it's widescreen although not "anamorphic" as a previous reveiwer also states (thanks for that btw - it made purchase the dvd, which I'd previously been hesitant about).
It's a great film, Barbra is delightful with a great supporting cast, some of who you will know their face from British tv etc.
The songs are alll wonderful & I always find watching this movie quite inspirational. It's one of my favourites.
