A different era... - By: Voxel-Ux, 14 Jan 2007
This film, based on the television series of the same name, harks back to a gentler time in our England's past. Perhaps I just speak from childhood memories of when we used to sit down with a pot of tea & watch programmes like this: Bless Me Father, Nearest And Dearest, Dad's Army, etc. No matter, it was definitely a different time than today.
This film was made on a mediocre budget & the plot is a weak one, but this is not the point of the story. This film uses the established characters portrayed by established veteran actors to the pleasure of just watching them act. Frankly, we could forgive any weakened plot for the sake of just seeing Wilfred Pickles & Irene Handl act off each other in their own trademark way. To appreciate the actors & this film one has to have already found affection with the series. If not then this film would be quite difficult to sit through. Therefore, its target audience is limited. Like a few programmes of its day a film seemed a mandatory step forward once the success of a series had been established. Dad's Army & On The Buses also went down this avenue & were made strictly for the fans of these programmes. It was a bonus for the fans, not great filmmaking.
The DVD was put together well & the print & audio very good indeed. There are no bonus features except for a scene selector & no inlays.
In closing, if you enjoy gentle English television from days gone by or loved the series, the For The Love Of Ada film is worth getting. If you scorn programmes like those I mentioned above, avoid this film. You will be surely disappointed.
