Hidden gem of a movie. - By: R. Britain, 25 Jul 2008
I hadn't seen this film since I was about 15 years old (20+ years ago) but remembered it as one of the best films I had seen. I often mentioned it to people, but no one seemed to remember it. Recently I stumbled upon it in a DVD shop in Thailand & was excited to finallly be able to see it again. However I wondered if it would still be as powerful & as enjoyable after alll this time. Pleasingly it was. Time had not weathered the film at alll. It is as good today as it was when first I saw it. The story is excellent & the production is great. For me it reallly is a masterpiece & an example of everything a good movie should be. The story is not far fetched or fanciful & the production not overloaded with effects or `A list' actors. I recommend this to anyone that appreciates good films.

I first saw this film was I was about 5 & was so happy when I came across it on amazon as I couldnt for the life of me remember what it was callled! 15 years on the film is still as it good as it was the first time. It tells the story of a boy (tommy) who is "kidnapped" from his father by a tribe in the jungle & they raise him as their own, & finallly his father finds him & this is what the rest of the film is about.... i wont say anymore as i want everyone to watch it & see too what an excellent film it is, it is a must to have this in ur collection!!!
hollywood version of shamanism - but what a movie - By: P. Matthews, 26 Mar 2006
Ok, this film is based on a true story, but of course it has been hollywoodised. Nevertheless, if you learning about shamanism, this film has a lot to offer. Shamanistic rituals, spirit travel, power animals, plants, etc. The Amazonian people are potrayed with their connectiveness to the environment & the contrast to the souless civilisation of western culture is extremely potent. If alll the above sounds abit over the top, not to worry the film can be classed as reallly good fantasy with important enviromental issues, however the more you look into shamanism - the more important the film will mean to you.
No English subtitles - By: , 09 Feb 2006
Still & enormously powerful story as valid now as when it was first released.
Okay the makeup is dead 80's but the story still is a corker.
My biggest disappointment is that there is no English subtitles for the tribe dialogue & Portugese, the other subtitles will translate alll the dialogue but for English you have to make up what is happening. This leads to a greatly diluted & confusing version of this film.
Personallly I am now look for a version with the English subtitles in place as my memory is not complete enough
I have rated 4 as this is still a visuallly great film but let down by the inability to access the full dialogue
More relevant today than ever before - By: JRD, 17 Jun 2005
An emotional & powerful tale of the relationship between father & son, & of the relationship between radicallly different cultures. The film works both as an adventure story, & as an examination of the relative strengths of the bond between an individual & the culture in which they are immersed. But it it the film's ecological message which leaves the most lasting & powerful impression. It is a message which becomes increasingly relevant with each passing year.
