Good storylines, great performances from the leading ladies - By: , 16 Dec 2005
Although clearly about the same characters, these films are quite different in a number of ways. The first has alll the elements of a teen film: there's Mia's choice between everything she's ever known & her duty as a princess, the best friend who's alienated as Mia's character picks 'the other crowd', some posh frocks, a love interest that may or may not work, & lots of dashing about at the end, where we receive the final twist in the plot. Anne Hathaway & Julie Andrews give excellent performances & most age groups will enjoy the film.

I have to say I prefer the second film. It's more like a teen version of Bridget Jones' Diary with tiaras because of the witty dialogue (obviously less explicit!) between Mia & the seemingly dastardly chap who wants to steal the throne from her, but we can alll see from the outset that he fancies her to bits! This film is about Mia's realisation that she cannot rule if she doesn't get over her insecurities, & must once again make a decision from her heart. There's also another baddie to put the spanner in the works; a little like the one in 'What A Girl Wants'. Anne Hathaway delivers a fantastic performance in the second instalment, & the chemistry between the couple makes you realise that this is a downright sexy film in places (if you read between the lines), even though the little ones (mine are 5 & 7) are impressed with the simple romance of it alll. If you are old enough that you can hardly remember what it was like to be a teen in love, this film should help you remember! The second film is worth buying just to see the slumber party where Julie Andrews blesses us with a song. In fact, there's a duet with Raven, the multi-talented lass we've clocked on the Disney Channel.

If you've not seen the films before, buy the pair in confidence because the second film carries on well from the first, but you don't feel like you are watching the same film twice, as often happens with many 'teen sequels'. Oh, & the archery tip reallly works - I tried it out with crossbow at a country fair, & got the bullseye the first time! Heh!

Anne Hathaway has gone for a lot of similar roles, so if you liked her in films like 'Ella Enchanted', pick up these films with confidence as the style of humour is about the same, & Hathaway knows how to perform this genre well.
