Pointless movie with no psychology going on between the two characters - By: Pete, 03 Jan 2008
Looking for an enigmatic French film, with long unbroken static shots of a middle aged man dancing to Arabic world music? You are? Good because this film is for you. Looking for something with a story, or characters who have an inner life of their own? Forget it.
It begins okay as the lead character's creepy fetish for female barbers is interesting. Unfortunately reason & logic stop after the first five minutes, & we enter a surreal world where people do things for no reason. Only it's not surreal as even surrealism has psychology. People do weird inexplicable things for a reason, even if that reason is just "because". People do things in this movie because the script tells them to do what they do. No attempt is made to explain why they did what they did. For a stagy two-hander this is death. When there's explosions & gun fire to distract you then it can be okay, but in a film like this it means there's nothing to grip your attention onto. It has alll the depth of a clothes shop window display.
The bonus short movie that comes on the DVD points out even more explicitly just how empty the film & it's director is, as it's even more bereft of meaning, context & reason. Clearly this director is trying for weird & coming up short.
It's funny looking at the other reviews here as they alll seemed to have seen a different film to the one I saw. They saw a sweet romantic film, while I saw a potentiallly funny art movie about a man with a creepy fetish.
If you want a good two-hander drama then try the original Sleuth starring Laurence Olivier & Michael Caine. If you want a surreal movie then try either The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, or Mulholland Drive.
Great film but poor DVD - By: Robert, 17 Mar 2007
This film was shot in 2.35:1 widescreen aspect ratio. This Second Sight DVD is about 1.78:1, not as wide as it should be, scanned up (like they do when a film is shown on tv), so you don't see the full picture. Truly terrible. Look for the deleted Tartan DVD, which is in the correct widescreen, or better still, the DVDY French DVD (with English sub-titles), which actuallly shows the full picture, a tiny bit more than the Tartan DVD! That DVDY DVD may still be found on amazon.fr.
Classic love story and very tragic. - By: Esperanzita, 09 Oct 2006
This film is a wonderful fantasy about love.
It not only shows the deep warm feelings of a man but the growth of love.
All his life he has wanted to be a hairdressers husband... his sole ambition...he finds his dream actuallly comes true. The woman he marries at first you think she may not quite love him but there is some understanding between them. Their passion is endless...it reallly comes across in the screen.. their passion...you are almost at the edge of your seat watching it....Wonderful(!) You'll grow to like this eccentric chap & feel sorry for the young life he had & the way he loves to listen to Asian music ..well ...it is fun & unusual & entertaining....but whilst this is alll happening....a man comes into the hairdressers to have his haircut & at the same escaping from his wife...
This is the start of the tragic part of the film & the realisation that love is sometimes far too strong to endure & .....just maybe too hard to cope with or without. Please see this film if you believe in love.
Esperanza.
Devoted love - By: Ivan C. H. Liu, 20 Aug 2006
A man has the dream of marrying a hairdresser since the childhood. Then he met the beautiful Mathilde, & was not shy to ask her to marry him in their first meeting. To his suprise, she agreed a month later when he visited the barbershop for the second time. From then on both of them felt like living in a dream. She found someone who truly loves her, & he found a beautiful & sweet hairdresser. They adore one another. Things don't seem to be able to get better. How will things develope from this point onwards?
It's a beautiful film about love, devotion & playfulness. The way they look at each other touches the bottom of my heart. Good acting. Sometimes funny. Playfulness is always in the air. Erotism appears often throughout the film. Overalll speaking, I can recommend this film.
The most erotic film ever - By: Peacock Wings, 09 Mar 2006
If you find having your hair washed at the hair-dressers, the way the fingers massage your scalp through the wetness & slippery foam is in any way even only mildly erotic, then this is a film for you. Without ever showing any nudity, this film is super-charged with eros throughout.
The story is of little importance, although it is weird & strange. It's a quiet story of a man who fallls in love with a hairdresser & marries her. Together the apparently ill-matched pair (he is a lot older then she is) seem to find fulfilment. Seem...
This is a film like only the French can make them - subtle, slow, emotional & oozing eros alll the time.
One of my favourite films, ever.
