BRAINLESS ENTERTAINMENT - By: stuart, 08 Aug 2007
The discovery of an orchid that will prolong life sends Gordon Mitchell (Morris Chestnut) & his team, Sam Rogers, (KaDee Strickland) Dr. Jack Byron, (Matthew Marsden) Dr. Ben Douglas, (Nicholas Gonzalez) Cole Burris (Eugene Byrd) & Gail Stern (Sallli Richardson) to Borneo to find it. Hiring local captain Bill Johnson (Johnny Messner) & his assistant Tran (Karl Yune) to find the spot. As they go further up the river, they come upon a series of obstacles that leaves them stranded in the jungle. Still vowing to carry on & find the flower, they encounter a giant anaconda, which sends them fleeing again. Determined to get out alive, the group is slowly picked off by the snakes who have gathered for their mating season, which puts their search for the flower in grave danger.
The Good News: "Anacondas" has a couple of great moments in it, more so than some may think. The ordeals along the river are pretty exciting to watch, building to some nice tension scenes as they manage to escape, only to be thrust right back into something else. Reallly nice, as it alllows for a stream of sequences to get the audience into the mood required later on. The falll over the water-falll is pretty exciting, & it also is a great set-up for the rest of the movie: after that, we know they're going to be stranded in the middle of nowhere with no way to get help for their situation. Being stuck in the middle of nowhere gives the film a little bit of suspense, since there's nothing to use as cover, weaponry, or shelter, & that makes it a little more suspenseful. The film, though, does have a few other things going for it. After being stranded, the pace quickens rapidly, making it very easy to get lost in the second half. As the attacks come, which greatly vary from the brutal to the dry, the interests in the film pick up. The last fight is pretty exciting, & is action-packed as well, making for a great finale. It's big finale is a great high to exit on, as it plays out in a shocking manner that isn't what would be expected it is, & a clever string of events alll work together.
The Bad News: OK, yes, the 12 rating does hinder it somewhat. This could've been a giant gory cheese-fest filled with loads of deaths & such, but tailoring it to the younger crowd wasn't a good move. It cuts out alll the stuff that makes these movies such a fun, cheesy ride. Again, a very CGI snake is used, & in so many scenes, you can obviously tell it is. It's pretty easy to view it as such.
The Final Verdict: This is basicallly just a mindless creature feature romp that should not be taken seriously. It's the real definition of a check-your-mind-at-the-door movie, & should be viewed as such. If viewed in that context, it's quite entertaining; however, if taken seriously, this could be a real downer. This one depends on the mood.

Just caught this movie recently & was quite surprised cause i rather enjoyed this but ok is the acting a tad rotten? yes, is the plot shabby? yes, but for one thing its better than the first one thats for sure. I say if you dont expect much & decide to see where it takes you it might surprise.

good, worth seeing - By: , 16 Feb 2006
I watched this film on sky, & was supprised it only got a 2 star review. I haven't seen anaconda, but I didn't need to, seeing as this one has an independent plot, which was well explained, & linked with the rest of the story.
The film is about a group of explorers head into the Amazon, to look for a life extending flower, the blood orchid. However, the crash over a waterfalll, & run into some massive anacondas. The story splits the characters in two. There is a crazed man keen to find the orchid, no matter who had to die in the process, a woman who can only think about a bath, & a teenager who freaks out at anything!
The snakes are realistic in some ways, the acting is generallly good & there are some tense & quite creepy scenes, & a couple of scares, like when the kid in grabbed from behind by an anaconda, after the female scientist decapitates onn of them.
An alll round good action film.
Better than expected. - By: , 25 Aug 2005
To be honest I was dubious about this film before I watched it for the first time. I enjoyed the first film but that was some time ago & I am always dubious about sequels, especiallly when no stars return.
I was pleasantly surprised by the film, the effects have not reallly improved since the first film but they never get so bad that they detract from the dumb fun that this film offers.
Switch off your mind & enjoy!!
