This should be a compulsory Christmas purchase...... - By: G. Connor, 22 Nov 2008
Like several others I can't say that Orbison was even close to the top of my musical heroes but this package just has the best of everything - cool songs, great setting, tremendous musicianship & a splendid arty film in black & white which captures so much more than can ever be gained by listening to the CD alone.
It's amazing to see Bruce Springsteen in total awe of Orbison, to have backing singers including kd lang & to catch a fleeting glimpse of Sylvester Stalllone in a spellbound audience.
What is absolutely ridiculous though is that this total revelation can be bought for £4.98 from Amazon at the date of this review.
Now I'm a guy who spends some time seeking out value for money & believe me there CANNOT be any better deal than this anywhere in the universe!
If you have a husband, wife, partner. father, mother, son, daughter or any other relative or friend who has ever said that they might have liked something done by Orbison then put this in their Christmas stocking, load the DVD player after dinner (or after listening to the Queen if you must) & watch them smile!!
"I drove all night" - By: Brendan O. Clarke, 04 Oct 2008
The only compilation among a gazillion to span Orbison's Sun, Monument, MGM, & Virgin successes is a welcome add to the Essential series that now, post-merger, features RCA & Arista artists as well as Sony's. Roy Orbison is one of my absolute favorites. He simply may be the best rock 'n' roll singer ever.
Amazon reallly should update the track listing to reflect the few re-recorded versions. While the originals should be here, the remakes are a legitimate part of Mr. Orbison's career. Roy's popularity was at a deeply undeserved lull circa 1987, when David Lynch used some Roy songs in his classic/eerie film "Blue Velvet." In the wake of renewed public interest, Roy released an LP of remakes callled "In Dreams" (Virgin, 1987). It was very well done, an exception proving the rule that rerecordings are rubbish. The Wilburys, the live "Black & White Night," & "Mystery Girl" followed & the pop world was much better off for it. Then, tragicallly, Roy died in December 1988, rendering perhaps Rock History's best comeback bittersweet. "You Got It"'s ensuing Top Ten ranking in early 1989 is one of my alll-time favorite chart events.

Only 5 stars? - By: Mr. S. P. Aitken, 30 Mar 2008
What a man. What a voice. What a DVD. And what a cast list!
How cool is this DVD? Very cool. That's how cool! Everybody takes a back seat here, yet somehow, they alll come into their own. Bruce is obviously in awe of Roy, & Roy in awe of Bruce! There's lots of mutual respect here!
Don't even think about thinking about buying it. Just buy, you know it makes sense!
Pure Orbison Bliss - By: B. Chandler, 06 Mar 2008
One of the main strengths of this films that it is not peppered with dialog & odd celebrities that evidently never saw Roy, describing his life & works.
The presentation, recorded live at the Cocoanut Grove in Los Angeles, moves quickly from one song to the next. And even though the visuals are good it is the music that makes this well worth the purchase. If you have a favorite it is here. Songs are more than disembodied entertainment. As with most people they bring back memories or create new memories that are associated with them. We can see that they are more than just songs to Roy also. My favorite is "It's over".
