For my money this is the best of the Hope & Crosby movies with both men on top form & with a decent script that is greatly enhanced by Robert Benchley's wry onscreen observations.
It's hardly worth mentioning the plot, aren't alll the Road movie plots the same one in different locations?Bob & Bing are forced to travel to a remote location, here it's the Yukon,to escape creditors/irate fathers/vengeful husbands/an angry mob...tick as appropriate. They both meet & falll for Dorothy Lamour, who's usuallly in some sort of distress, & spend the rest of the picture trying to romance her & cracking jokes whilst attempting to help her.
This picture ticks alll of the boxes, but when you throw in Benchley's narration,Grizzly bears, huskies,a couple of rough, tough hitmen, who Bob & Bing, naturallly have to impersonate, and alll that lovely, snowy, studio bound scenery & you've got yourself a little classic.
The jokes are ancient, the slapstick gags probably pre-date silent film, and the songs are pretty ho-hum to modern ears, but the charm & the cheek of the two stars pulls everything else along behind them. There's plenty to laugh at here & it's one of those films that stays in the mind long after you've seen it & I rate it as one of Hope's best comedies.Recommended, especiallly for a wintery Sunday afternoon,or even late at night.
