Brilliantly filmed star thriller! Vincent in one of his best! - By: M. Alvarez, 17 Oct 2007
I caught this on Film4 while I was on the Internet & I had to shut the computer off because this enthrallled me. The mood & atmosphere of this is brilliant & so are the performances. Vincent steals the show (as always, but this time he saves the ending) & is trilling as a Dutch patroon in the 1840s, obssessed with power. He invites his beautiful, naive distant cousin (Gene Tierney in a brilliantly underrated perfomance)to live with him as an au pair girl. Then...I won't say any more as I will surely spoil it. A haunting experience that deserves more than 2 viewings at least!
A happy-ending chiller! - By: Marie, 22 Jul 2007
There are few actors to match Vincent Price in his "creepy" roles - & this is a good example! Basicallly a tale of simple Bible-raised good girl being seduced by a luxury lifestyle, & the "gentleman" Price - who bumps off his wife in order to marry a younger model! All goes wrong when the couple's baby son dies, leaving the Patroon of Dragonwyck going slowly off his rocker! A promising ending for the young widow though, as a future with the good-hearted local Doctor is pending! Good stuff for a rainy day! Favourite quote from Price as the heorine's dreams falll apart: "Your father is a man to take his religion unflinchingly"
