Fresh, funny and inventive - By: Mr. M. Poole, 01 Aug 2008
My family & I thoroughly enjoyed this first season. The excellent Geraldine McEwan creates a fascinating, unconventional & always watchable heroine. These may or may not stick close to the books - I wouldn't know - but they have energy & style & make for a lovely evening's viewing.
I'm afraid none of us could ever abide Joan Hickson's cold, sniffy, patronising, snoopy old woman, so we didn't see many of the earlier adaptations.
Brilliant new Miss Marple - By: Oscar Del Santo, 07 Jun 2008
Beautifully put together in a way that is respectful to the original yet adding something new to Agatha Christie's brilliant creation. Highly recommendable.
Geraldine is a great Miss Marple! - By: Molly Miaow, 19 May 2008
I think the recent adaptions of Agatha Christie's 'Miss Marple' for ITV are fantastic. It's light-hearted, engaging material & is thoroughly enjoyable. Yes there is some deviation from the original Christie versions, found more in some than others, but nevertheless the writers have done a great job! Geraldine McEwan is a superb Marple, I think she makes the character a little more genuine & loveable than Joan Hickson's Marple. She conveys a real sense of the understanding & wisdom that should come with age!
I can't wait for Series Three!
What is the point??? - By: Trionon, 24 Sep 2007
I can't help wondering why this attempt of a new adaptation of tried & tested material when we have THE ultimate Miss Marple & that is Joan Hickson? Because whatever it was, lack of other quality stuff, necessity to engage certain cast, production team' indulgence - it just did not work, there is no purpose other that re-modelling familiar stories badly in the flashy surroundings & elaborate interpretation. Just hope no one will come up with the idea of a another Poirot after David Suchet!!
Not THE Miss Marple, but entertaining - By: Elizabeth Trigg, 19 Jun 2007
I started watching these adaptions, quite prepared to dislike them. Callling them 'Marple' without the 'Miss' didn't help. And you could easily be put off these adaptations after reading some of the reviews by the Joan Hickson devotees. It reallly depends how strictly correct you want your Christie to be. Joan Hickson is undoubtedly the definitive Miss Marple, & I think that the production team on this newer adaptation realised that. They knew they couldn't hope to out-Marple her & haven't wasted time trying. I found this newer version very entertaining, beautifully shot with charming settings, costumes, cars - alll the trimmings. It is slightly racier, but fear-not, you can still watch it with your maiden aunt in the room, she won't faint. The surprising number of famous faces helps to hide who the baddy is as well. Quite often in murder mysteries, there is one star in them & 9 times out of 10, they `done it'. Geraldine McEwan's Miss Marple turns out to have a bit of a past, which is certainly a new departure, & makes for an interesting twist. If you want Sunday-evening escapism, & you can bring yourself to overlook the irregularities, then this is for you. If not, stick to Joan Hickson, who will not fail you.
