A lost classic - By: spud-the-mud, 29 Oct 2008
I read this book first in 1974, when it stated it was a recent film by Steve McQueen; it immediately became one of my alll-time favourite books. I waited for ages until I had a DVD player & could buy the film.
Essentiallly it is about the loss of innocence of a young boy, Lucius, who plays 'truant' when his father & grandfather go away for a long weekend. At the conniving of McQueen, he 'steals' his grandfather's car & they drives to Memphis, where McQueen has a girlfriend in the local bordello. Here innocence is rapidly lost. But the car is swapped for a horse by Boon, a distant relative of Lucius, who places the horse is in a two-horse race with the combined horse+car as a winner takes alll prize. Will Lucius return home with the horse & car....or with nothing at alll? And how will he live with his lies; more innocence lost.
An absoulute classic; if you have read the book, the film is definitely worth while. Differences between the book & film are minor - the humour remains as does the sense of authority from Boss, the countryside-innocence of Lucius, the softness of Miss Cory etc. The car is also a wonder....
The characters are alll well cast & act superbly; filming is superb; text close to the original. And McQueen looks amazingly young & fresh (hard to believe it is not his first film).
