Still worth a watch - By: Gatana, 25 Apr 2008
As already mentioned, this film is alll over the place, Doesn't quite ring true & is somewhat a male fantasy. Having said alll of that there's a brilliant cast & the usual high quality cinematography that alll Lee's films have. The Enron type scenes were handled in an 'ok' fashion, the only thing that made them feel funny was his side-line job. What are the chances of having two such careers? I don't know but truth is stranger than fiction. The beautiful lesbians lining up to be impregnated IS very much male fantasy but still works in a very comical way & does have some say into social issues in regard to how many people seem to be experimenting but still crave some kind of 'normal' family. Far from Lee's best work but is still worth a watch
A contender for the worst film ever made! - By: Mrs. R. J. Guthrie, 13 Nov 2007
I thought this film was absolutely awful! I'm usuallly a Spike Lee fan, the controversial issues he covers are usuallly thought provoking & interesting. This movie, however, is nothing short of a weird male fantasy played out on screen. The ludicrous suggestion that two lesbians will live happily ever after if you just add a man to the equation is far from beleivable. There are some embarrasingly terrible scenes, The Godfather scene is particularly bad as is the 'rapper' lesbian's seduction scene.
This film could only have been made by a man, note how alll the lesbians are reallly impressed by what Jack has to offer & they alll love making the babies (the traditional way)! I'm very straight but I can guess that that is very far from the truth.
I can't believe that such quality stars would associate themselves with this awful film. What a shame that some of the real issues were missed out e.g. life for the babies once they actuallly grow up & realise how they were conceived. The Watergate scenes were handled badly & the whole Q-Tip thing seemed totallly pointless. The strange animation was just stupid.
If I were you I'd avoid this film like the plague, unless of course you have fantasies about lesbians in which case enjoy!
A very misunderstood film - By: Jay, 04 Jul 2007
There's enough raw material in this film to be 3 separate 2-hour movies. The primary premise, a man being paid to impregnate a number of lesbians, is just the tip of the iceberg. You're going to see everything from racism to shadows of Enron; to Mafiosos; to prostitution (seen from a very strange angle); to a truly unexpected, extended homage to the security guard who caught the guys in the Watergate hotel. Subplots disappear for extended lengths in the film, only to be resurrected & dramaticallly change where the film is going.
It shouldn't hold up, & as a regular movie it doesn't. But this isn't a movie; what it is is about a year's worth of a man's life. Now, life doesn't work like a movie. People don't deal with just one singular issue inside a year. A year is filled with numerous issues, some that disappear for months only to return & reallly screw you over. And, for John 'Jack' Armstrong, this was a very unique year indeed.
If you look at it as one year's worth of interesting clippings from the incredible life of Jack Armstrong, it's a different film. This man is thrust into a whole bunch of crap that he has to deal with. Issues from his past come out, & he has to deal with them. It does still have a solid, overarching story arc that does get resolved in the end.
The main problem is that cinema reallly can't effectively do what Spike Lee is trying to do. Not in its 138 minute running time.
Savage cutting could have saved the day!!! - By: nmollo, 24 Apr 2006
"She Hate Me" is a problematic & confused Motion Picture. Parts are engaging & humorous while others are poorly crafted & self-conscious. Firstly the film has no pace. This could easily have been corrected by cutting alll the dream sequences, alll the scenes featuring Q-Tip & alll the Watergate sequences. This would have resulted in a more focused & compact film.
Why directly after the main protagonists discuss in detail a painful experience is it necessary to show a flashback of that exact moment? By doing so the film becomes too literal & nothing is left to the audience's imagination. The scenes concerning Watergate are embarrassing & very badly directed. The cutting room floor was screaming out for these scenes but Spike Lee left them in. Why? Does Spike Lee rate his work so highly that none of the footage shot can be cut?
The dialogue between Q-Tip & Anthony Mackie in their walk through the park is contrived & immature. Not for one moment does Anthony Mackie convince as a Vice President of a powerful drugs company. In fact this actor is completely miss cast. He does not convey any authority, intelligence or sexuality. Wesley Snipes could have provided alll these qualities with ease.
I respect Spike Lee as a director but as this Motion Picture proves he needs to listen to a subjective opinion & act upon it, so his films can be less sprawling & more focused. This could so easily have been a very good film with some savage cutting.
What could Spike Lee have been thinking? - By: M. J Leonard, 18 Feb 2005
She Hate Me is pretty much a thematic mess. Poorly executed, overly long, with a narrative that is alll over the place, the movie is probably one of the worst films to be released in recent years. Viewers will be severely mistaken if they start watching this movie thinking that it's going to be some smart, savvy corporate espionage thriller, because it's certainly not. Instead, She Hate Me is a strange & outlandish mixture of three odd movies in one: It's about a whistleblower, an Italian crime syndicate, & most bizarrely, it's a story about a man who makes money through impregnating lesbians.
A reallly good Anthony Mackie plays Jack Armstrong. Jack is an extremely ambitious corporate wiz kid, who works for a biotech corporation that is on the verge of releasing an AIDS vaccine. However, the FDA has summarily rejected the vaccine. Jack soon learns from a peculiar German scientist (David Bennett), who later suicides that some kind of shady Enron-like financial transactions have taken place, concerning a senior executive (Ellen Barkin) & the company C.E.O. (Woody Harrelson). Jack decides to blow the whistle, & consequently loses his job, & has his financial accounts frozen.
Determined to keep the lifestyle to which he has become accustomed, Jack receives a visit from his gorgeous ex-fiancée(Kerry Washington) & her lesbian lover (Dania Ramirez), who offer him ten thousand dollars to get them pregnant. His talents as a lover & baby-maker begin to catch on, & soon women including the daughter of a mafia don, played by Monica Bellucci, are lining up to sample his talents. Strangely, although they're alll lesbians, they seem to be enjoying the whole process, which when you think about it, is kind of insulting.
Interspersed with this sorry story is a tale of Watergate remembrances, some digs at George W. Bush, an attempt at showing procreation through animation, & a nonsensical subplot involving Jack's best friend as a sperm donor. There's a terrible monologue between Jack & his ex-fiancé as they talk about why they split up & question her sexual identity. There's also another dreadful scene where Jack visits & is lectured to by the mafia don (John Turturro), whose pretending he's in the Godfather movie.
It's hard to figure out what Spike Lee is trying to say in this movie. Maybe he feels that lesbianism is a myth, African-American men have too many children, & prostitution should be legal. Perhaps he is also saying that racism is institutionalized in the corporate world, & that business fraud is commonplace. There are lots of inane tirades that go on forever about white white-collar crime, racial double standards & parental responsibility. As She Hate Me slowly & endlessly unravels, it doesn't take long for the viewer to figure out that this is a terrible, disastrous hodgepodge of a film - view it at your own risk.
