Warm but not scorching - By: Stampy, 06 Sep 2008
Ron Perlman (Beauty & the Beast) stars as Hellboy, a creature who arrives in earth after an experiment during the war went wrong, & now in modern day works for the government as a protector of the good from the bad.

Based on Mike Mignola's comic books, this charming & action packed fantasy adventure delivers on a wonderful entertaining basis, though with a few flaws.

With an entertaining & magical opening, Hellboy will invite you into a fantastical world filled with dark magic & extraordinary creatures. The war settings & the business surrounding the opening are highly intriguing & will grab your attention straightaway, & when the child of Hellboy arrives you will be hooked as time moves forward with a montage of the creature growing up under the government's influence.

The plot revolves around Hellboy, & his relationship with society & evil, & somewhat ironic that a guy from hell is good, which gives the ideology of the film a sweet edge. There isn't much reference to heaven & hell as one or opposites, which would have created more depth & a greater understanding of Hellboy's home & instead, focuses upon the good nature of the hellish man, & it's interesting to see him portrayed as a man, with human emotions & beliefs rather than an animal, which is the view of the society in the plot, which creates emotional tension & entertainment, & a sort of controversy for current society.

Filled with action packed sequences, Hellboy dives into a horror & fantasy genre with its use of different creatures & appearances, giving the film a unique & approachable appeal, which is largely helped by Del Toro's stunning & gripping direction.

The Hellboy himself is interesting. Though funny, every phrase he utters feels like he knows he is a superhero, thinks himself cool, & adds way too much sophistication & daftness to his character. These phrases add up to unnecessary egotistical central protagonist, who despite being funny, can be very annoying & clichéd.

The plot is consistent, delivering action & suspense on a consistent basis with a different approach to the superhero genre. The ending however feels put of place with a dramatic climax which had no proper build up. Nevertheless & entertaining surprising action film

7.5/10
Del Toro does it again - By: Bob Pobble, 31 Aug 2008
I love this film... It's funny, but not in the wrong places. You know what i mean - when someone cracks a pitiful joke in the middle of a sad scene. Perlman does a good job of the tough guy, but the emotions reallly show through too. Even the music is excellent! I can't wait to see Hellboy 2.
An ok film ... nothing less, nothing more. - By: N. Thompson, 18 Aug 2008
Ron Perlman is a perfect choice for the role of Hellboy & hes wonderful playing the part. The production of the film is good, the acting is decent, the story is fast paced & i enjoyed the film. However, it is missing something I cant put my finger on. Overalll it's an above-average movie, worth a watch but nothing special. I have never read the comic so I came into this film with an open-mind & I found it to be a decent escapism-type film. With the sequel just around the corner I have just watched it again but that is only the second time I have watched this film. Comic-to-film adaptations are always a mixed bag, but this is one I didnt mind watching .... not as good as Batman Begins or 300, but certainly better than the dreadful Superman Returns or the lame Fantastic 4 film.
Fun Comic Book Adventure from Guillermo Del Torro and Mike Mignola - By: John Kwok, 09 Aug 2008

"Hellboy II: The Golden Army" is a fun comic book adventure that's one of the better films I have seen this year. Director/writer Guillermo Del Toro & writer - & Hellboy creator Mike Mignola - have crafted a superb superhero action adventure film featuring the often-overlooked Ron Perlman as that devilish hero Hellboy. Sure, he's a flawed son of Satan now committed to fighting for "truth, justice & the American way" (oops, wrong superhero, but you get my point), while also indulging in beer & expensive Cuban cigars. But this time around, he has two problems. First, his relationship with his long-time girlfriend, the fiery Liz (Selma Blair) seems to be reaching a new low - or rather is it? Second, he must deal with the war-like wishes of Elven prince Nuada (Luke Goss), seeking to save his Elvish people from humanity, by resurrecting the legendary, immortal Golden Army. So does Hellboy succeed with his pals Liz & Abe Sapien (Doug Jones) in resisting Prince Nuada's hostile intentions towards humanity? While I won't spoil the fun - but instead, urge you to see the film - I shalll note that you'll laugh, cry & eat lots of popcorn watching Hellboy & his friends at work, trying to save America & the rest of humanity. And once you do see the film, I hope that you will realize how ready director Guillermo Del Toro is in tackling J. R. R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" as his next cinematic masterpiece after "Pan's Labyrinth".

Hellish entertainment! - By: lukesterator, 06 Aug 2008
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.
There was an aura of entertainment when viewing this move.
Please note before showing movie to child under age of 12, it is very violent & their is a lot of murder scenes, & a lot of swearing.
Be cautious on what you show to your kids!

P.S It was very good though!
