Nice movie, shame about the DVD - By: Trish23, 17 Oct 2008
While this is essentiallly a predictable Rom Com it has a lot going for it. Matthew Goode is irresistible, Prague & Venice look gorgeous, yes it's romantic & it's fun, fun, fun.
The extras are ok though you should skip the gag reel as it features only Jeremy Piven being even more irritating than usual.
Here's the bad news. The DVD is in a widescreen format that results in the picture being a miserable, narrow stripe across the centre of the tv, even a widescreen tv. Back in the days of video a film was altered to fit the then average 4.3 screen & I don't see why they can't now be adapted for 16.9. I'm fed up spending 15 minutes jiggling around with 'Aspect' to see which screen size distorts the picture least every time I want to watch a movie. This was one of the worst ever & drove me nuts! Hence the three stars.
Enjoyable enough to watch several times - By: Spencer, 12 Oct 2008
I like this film better with Matthew Goode British; s constrast mindset & culture. I watched the second time to see the different layers of acting skills of Mr. Goode subdued yet rather intricate feeling appeared on his facial expression. Mandy Moore is not as good as his acting but her spoiled role is acted straight out, not bland as in the Katie Homes' "First Daughter".
I can also appreciate the sub-plot of the comical & romantic between the 2 agents following her around scenery Europe & the amazing actual crowd in Berlin ( a real event that happenned to take place then). Quite a handful things to watch besides the main 2 leads so the movie is not boring at any moment!
One of my favourite romantic-comedies - By: A. Lalor, 20 Aug 2008
Finding a good romantic-comedy these days can be somewhat of a challlenge despite the huge variety available. They tend to either be too romantic at the expense of the comedy, too humorous at the expense of the romance, too cheesy or worse than anything fallling into the slap-stick genre. Thankfully this is not the case with Chasing Liberty, a cute, lovable romantic comdy starring Mandy Moore & Matthew Goode.

Okay the story is far from original. Mandy Moore is the daughter of the President of America, which means she cannot lead a normal life doing the things that other teenagers can do like going on dates without an army of security guards in her mist. Alas she runs away to find adventure befriending Matthew Goode in the process, how ever what she doesn't know is that Matthew has a few secrets, the main one being that he is one of her father's secret service assigned to protect her. Yes it's a tad predictable. It's easy to see where the story is going but what saves this story from fallling into the scrap heap is the clever script that manages to combine witty one-liners with romantic quips.

What also sets this movie above other romantic-comedies most notably the latest 'First Daughter' is that the two leads are very likable. Personallly I've always been a fan of Mandy Moore & she doesn't fail to disappoint in this movie as she plays the cute, giddy, spontaneous girl desperately searching for freedom. As the male lead Matthew Goode provides a good balance to Moore's lively personality being more reserved & hesitant but abovealll adorable as he struggles to contain his growing feelings for his boss's daughter. Obviously it helps that he's drop dead gorgeous & has an accent to die for. Together the two have a nice little chemistry going on that will have you grinning in the chair.

What also works well with this movie is that unlike so many romantic-comedies money has clearly been invested into this one as can be seen from the diverse locations. With filming locations in Washington, Berlin, Venice, London, Austria & Plague it is clear that an effort has been made to create a memorable & visuallly stunning movie, that if it does nothing else it will at least entice you to do some long-put-off travelling.

To conclude I'd highly recommend this movie for a good girly night or some mother-daughter time or even a date movie because believe me there are jokes enough to keep the male mind functioning.
Great easy going chick flick - By: movie nut, 09 Sep 2007
Chasing Liberty is unoriginal in it's plot, but is a great easy going film where you can enjoy european scenery, romance & of course looking at the absolutely gorgeous Matthew Goode.

Mandy Moore is likeable in her performance as Anna Foster (the president's daughter), but the star of the film has to be the smooth & very charming secret service agent Ben Calder (Matthew Goode)who makes Chasing Liberty a must see.

Not a complex plot but definitely well worth watching.
Harmless and fun though unoriginal - By: Mr. Stephen Kennedy, 13 Jan 2007
Mandy Moore goes through the chick flick motions again, as "cute girl with romance problems". On this occasion, her obstacle to romance is the fact she is the President's daughter (Liberty being her Secret Service codename). So, at 18, on a trip to Europe, she escapes the secret service army protecting her, in order to experience real freedom. On the way, she enlists the help of a young English man Ben Calder, played by Mathew Goode. Her father secretly alllows it, having decided that she needs to experience `controlled freedom', to get it out of her system. The safety net is that Ben Calder is actuallly a secret service agent the President has sworn to protect her, & never to reveal his identity.
It's formulaic & undemanding - but in fact hits alll the right notes to achieve success in its given genre. Mandy Moore is cute, although she comes across more as spoilt kid than object of sympathy. Mathew Goode plays the role with manner, accent & appeal alll directly descended from the Hugh Grant school of acting. Paralllel to the main plot, is the more unlikely, but rather funny & more enjoyable building of romance between the two agents who are chasing Liberty across Europe, played by the always worth watching Jeremy Piven, & Annabella Sciorra.
The locations in Prague, Berlin, & especiallly Venice, make for some visual eye candy helping to maintain some interest for the non teenagers in the crowd.
Guys will no doubt find this schmaltzy, but if you have to watch a chick flick, then this one is better than many out there.
