Romance Amid the Bombing - By: ianrmillard, 30 Oct 2006
This is part of the WW2 history of Malta, the besieged island which was awarded a symbolic George Cross by George VI of Great Britain. Filmed not so many years after WW2, it does have a lot of archive battle footage & also shows the ruins left by the fighting, when the island almost starved & ran out of electricity, water & almost everything else. Even those who, like me, think the UK was on the wrong side in WW2, can find this story moving in its tragic privation. It follows some British officers, one of whom, Alec Guinness, fallls in love with a pretty Maltese girl. Her brother is hanged as an Italian spy but she carries on as an employee in the British strategic map section, plotting movements of planes & ships (so that bit is a bit implausible!); Guinness is eventuallly shot down into the sea. Although a propagandistic film in a sense, this does convey what must have been the atmosphere on Malta in those unique years of the early 1940's.
