Swept under the rug - By: Brendan O. Clarke, 24 Nov 2008
Just watching Guy Ritchie movies recently in the build-up to his latest Cinematic venture & i can safely say i enjoyed alll of them except for this 90 minutes of garbage.

Apparently willing to scuttle his own career, Ritchie writes & directs a film in which he does everything possible to make his own wife (now ex-wife) look like an ugly, rotten, skinny, nagging & despicable NY scrubber.

The only thing "swept away" is the 90 minutes spent watching this waste of time. This movie is Shipwrecked.

So bad it's good! - By: Mrs. C. M. Wood, 05 Jul 2007
You have to take this film for what it is; Guy Ritchie probably bullied by his wife into making a romantic film that's a bit pretentious in which she will star - it was never going to be any good but the fact that it is so bad makes it enjoyable. So if you want a good night in for less than a tenner invite a mate round, rent this film & get through a couple of bottles of wine!
Forget Madonna, watch this instead - By: saki, 01 Aug 2006
I'm reallly surprised no one has bothered to review this film, I saw it by chance about 10 years ago, & thought it was brilliant! It was a raucous romp, mad & truly unforgettable.

Don't bother to see Madonna's version - she's only a poor imitation of the real thing

I love foreign films & they don't come any better than this!

Wow! Best Romantic (funny) Film I've Seen in Ages!! - By: J. C. PAESANO, 07 Jul 2006
I watched this film, as I had to see for my self, why it could be so bad. Not many films make me laugh out loud & this one did. I thought the acting was excellent, Madonna was entertaining, I forgot it was her, Adriano Giannini is an incredibly talented, funny & sexy actor. The chemistry is believable. This is an intelligent film & has a deep & meaningful side about the nature of human beings. Whether Guy Ritchie realised this or if it was accidental, who knows?

Unbelievably bad - By: Concinnity, 24 Apr 2006
Only the most hardcore Madonna fan could find artisitc merit in this movie. It is a shame because Madonna is an obviously talented perfomer.

This is a remake of the 1974 Italian film, Swept Away by an Unusual Destiny in the Blue Sea of August (Travolti da un insolito destino nell'azzurro mare d'agosto), written & directed by Lina Wertmüller. This is a classic work of cinema: a powerful metaphor for the class war & an absorbing study in gender politics.

By contrast, this awful remake takes a gripping story & turns it into a poor & pointless romance, complete with pedestrian direction, wooden acting & a dreadful script.

Don't just take my word for it. Roger Ebert, the American film critic, gave the original movie four stars (his highest rating); he gave the remake one star.

The movie was a commercial failure, & did so badly in the United States that it was not released in theatres in the United Kingdom but went straight to video. The film even "won" five awards at the 2002 Golden Raspberry Awards:

"Worst Picture"
"Worst Actress" for Madonna
"Worst Screen Couple" for Madonna & Adriano Giannini
"Worst Remake or Sequel"
"Worst Director" for Guy Ritchie
In addition, Adriano Giannini was nominated for, but did not win, "Worst Actor".

It was the first film ever to win both "Worst Picture" & "Worst Remake or Sequel". Impressive......

Do not be misled by the Madonna fans - those who would applaud her in anything, regardess of how banal it was. This is a terrible movie. Buy the original instead.
