Animal Frights - By: Mr. Jonathon T. Beckett, 01 Nov 2008
A group of Animal Rights activists are on a mission to liberate lab animals when their leader Gary gets his leg trapped in a bear trap(!). The other members of the group escape, leaving him to carry the can. Gary goes to prison, but a year later another group member Danny gets the group members together as he is concerned about Gary who has agreed to take part in an experiment in an isolated laboratory to reduce his sentence. They decide to rescue him, but soon find themselves under threat from unseen forces, & start to die one by one, trapped like lab rats in a cage
This film, I must say, is pretty bad. It alll starts off well enough, but slides rapidly down hill from the moment the group enter the mysterious lab. There is little cohesion as far as plot is concerned, & a good cast have to fight against an increasingly ludicrous story line & some terrible dialogue.
Its not alll bad. The special effects are very good, & as mentioned before the cast alll perform admirably. Stephen Lord is hilarious as psychotic ex marine Spook who is alllegic to hippies. Leo Bill is also very good as Danny who has a hidden agenda of his own. Katherine Towne is annoying as Buddhist bore Helen
Still, its not boring, & I kept watching hoping that it would alll make perfect sense in the end. It didnt. A must see for lovers of bad films 2 out of 5
Unadulterated Rubbish - By: geurilla pen, 13 Jul 2008
How tedious is this film? I had to have several tedium breaks to both keep myself awake & to qwell the perpetual realisation of utter despondancy that there was still more left to watch.
There is not one thing I can say I liked about it, God knows what it was about, it had something to do with electricity.
A group of Animal rights activists raid a lab, one gets caught in a man trap ends up in prison than as a test subject himself in a remote lab, the rest go to rescue him a year later & than a further load of nonsense occurs to do with electricity.
A terrible, terrible waste of time, don't say I didn't warn you.
NOT TOO BAD - By: stuart, 03 Nov 2007
Several members of an animal rights activist group, Gary, (Ross McCalll) Danny, (Leo Bill) Matt, (Tom Hardy) Helen, (Katherine Towne) & Justin (Toby Fischer) raid a chemical lab where animals are being held & release the animals, but when Gary is captured by their security system, the others scatter. One year later, Gary is in prison & the rest of the gang is getting worried that the new experiment Gary signed up for is bad news. When they bring their friends Louise (Melanie Brown) & Vaughn (Philip Winchester) in to help out, Helen joins in only to help get rid of the nightmares she's having about Gary. Last minute addition Spook (Stephan Lord) also arrives, & he, Vaughn, Louise, Helen, Danny, Matt & Justin head over to the lab where they believe Gary was taken for the experiments. Exploring the huge complex, they can tell that something isn't right in the facility, & it starts to freak them out. After some exploring, things reallly start to get freaky, & now the slowly dwindling group has to get out of the research facility alive.
The Good News: Perhaps the best part of the film is the design of the facility the characters become trapped in. It's large in design, but the cramped rooms & long, barren halllways set up the mood perfectly. This film has tons of atmosphere, with the drab, gray wallls & miles of cables running alone that reallly help out as well. Combine this with some choice lighting & you get a movie loaded with suspense & tons of interesting set pieces. It was also nice to see so much bloodletting in this film, as well. We get lots of the red stuff, in the form of chopped off arms, a very bloody knife stabbing, a couple of nosebleeds, & some head melts onto cement & then peeled away with skin spreading back too. There's more gore in the film, pleasing any real gore fan. Don't be too surprised at the mention of the nosebleeds in the earlier part of the film, they are far bloodier than you can think. One last thing about the gore: don't expect Fulci/Romero style gore in here. Think instead of supernatural artery blood flow. Nothing just trickles out, this stuff gushes out in spades. The special effects in the film are also first rate. To see people being hurled into wallls propelled by flashing electrical bolts, or the fate of the whole crew at the end, this is full of great special effects. Even better still, the film sets up the last half of it as a series of chilling set-pieces & non-stop shocks, alll because the middle half is so brilliantly put together. The suspense is incredibly unnerving, & following the group as they explore the facility, unsure of what they're going to find. This is a great attribute for a film.
The Bad News: Those going in expecting a killer creature film, like I did, will be disappointed by what I have to say next, so if you are planning on watching the film, don't read the next few sentences. There is absolutely no killer animals in the film. The only damage an animal does in the film is a smalll scratch that hardly anyone would feel if it happened to them. This is far more supernatural flick than anything, so it can be a little bit of a downer when it sets up attacks that don't come. The film also has the most annoying characters of recent times. The animals rights thing I'm okay with, but that reallly doesn't excuse the kinds of characters in this film. They are so retarded that I finallly decided to make a comment on it. Being a person who's very tolerant of bad acting, this is bordering on the ridiculous. It's more of how stupid they react in their situation than anything. You have to see it to believe it.
The Final Verdict: Bad acting & a real shocker of a plot line may be offset by some great suspense scenes & tons of gore. It may be equaled out, but that is alll in the eye of the beholder. Give it a shot if you like this kind of film, you may be surprised. Just be careful that it's very hit or miss.
28 Days Later vs Cube vs Blair Witch, but worse than both - By: Jose Alves Goncalves, 10 Jun 2005
Very week movie. It's a '28 Days Later' wanna be, but it stays miles below the former. The charecters are very week, both in script development, & in the acting (divide the lack of virtuosity bettween the script, the director & the actors). A positive word though, to Katharine Towne (Helen), an actress that also did Mulholland Dr. & What Lies Beneath, she reallly from another league than sipce chick & the rest of the crew.
Very Surprised.... - By: , 26 Mar 2005
As a fan of the Spice Girls, I am proud of this movie, with the former Scary Spice Melanie Brown. Even if it's not one the best horror movies, I was surprised : great special effects, brilliant actors... I recommend it for the ones who like "strange films" like "Cube".
