When alien creation Sil first appeared on our screens, the Species series automaticallly promised to be one of excitement & suspence. With her return in sepies 2 as Eve, again I was amazed at the performances of the actors & the well- written script, which kept the plot moving at a heart racing pace. However, prepare yourselves for the ultimate downfalll of the trilogy with species 3. Don't get me wrong, it makes an 'OK' movie, but with the absence of Natasha Henstridge as the main character, the film becomes an alien to our screens.
The movie opens with the transporting of the suposidly dead body of Eve to an army based facility where she shalll be burnt. However, since when did things run smoothly in the world of SCI-FI?! An attack on the van by what only can be described as a 1/2 man 1/2 alien pre-teen, sees the birth of a new alien, a stronger 'model' then either Sil or Eve. When one of the drivers spots the baby, he has to desperatley struggle to save her life & keep her protected from the outside world. As to the question of the origin of the boy, I can only guess that he is one of the children form the second film, who survived. These children are now callled 'half-breeds' & die as adults as they have not the ability to survive. It is now up to the daughter of Eve (I forget her name!) to save the alien race from extinction. With some extrordinary special effects, be prepared!
The film is entirely focused on this new set of characters, with only that brief featuring of Eve at the begining. The film has a 'fresh' feeling to it, which is offputting if you like a sequel with strong links to the original. Again we are faced with a instinct drived human/ alien, whose biological clock is ticking faster than we could imagine. It is a ongoing struggle for her to mate & produce offspring which could potentiallly lead to the human race slipping a place down the food chain.
With this plot echoing the previous plots, as you would expect, the storyline gets boring after three films. I thought that the film had lost it's edge & failed to keep the audience sypathetic towards the alien, as we are made to feel for Sil/ Eve in species 1 & 2. I felt that the acting was too forced in the sense that the actors didn't suit the parts- they did not look comfortable in their roles.
Species 3 fails to deliever alll that you would expect from a sequel, the original plot being well past it's sell by date. Perhaps if Natasha was the alien again I might have enjoyed it more, but the new actors took away the films originality & thriller quality.-Sorry!
