***** TRIPPY AUDIO/VISUAL SMORGASBOARD ***** - By: t'amant, 22 Jul 2006
Yes, that's five stars for extra trippy mind candy! Turn off the sound & watch just video (and slow it down/speed it up)...or just listen to the music alone: mono perception is stimulating enough, but now combine the two for binocular melding. These creations are cool & freaky generallly, but some like Sledgehammer, Big Time, Kiss That Frog, Steam, The Barry Williams Show, Solsbury Hill, Digging The Dirt (I could go on) are artistic, intelligent & powerful juggernauts - relentless & overwhelming! Many of these are quite sexy with the gorgeous females & some of the other less trippy videos are often heavy emotionallly. It is funny to me how consistent his style has been over the years...although some might feel that detracts, he owns his trademark sound & no one else touches it (listen to Tony Levin's bass on many of these!). Some of the videos are from 25 years ago, but seem very forward thinking & advanced. of course some of the computer generated effects look a bit dated, but that is to be expected - they are still exceptional & ground-breaking for their time. It takes a good long while to get through this whole dvd, which we alll know is a plus if the material flows. I want to point out that I am watching on a huge projected hd screen with dts surround. It does make alll the difference with music & videos like this. The extras are also very entertaining with a couple of extra videos, trailers & family (of Peter's) get to know you segments. I was always something of a Genesis fan (though I focused more on Yes, King Crimson, Floyd, Gong, Jethro Tull, Moody Blues, etc. back in the 70's), & Peter Gabriel's Genesis is my favorite since he was such a force in that great band (to put my view in perspective). Many songs later & glimpses of future Gabriel videos over the years confirmed in my mind that this guy is a scary (in a good way), maniacal human kaleidescope - & a fascinating one at that. One of the great musical forces of our time. Watch these videos closely & be in amazement...THIS IS MIND CANDY THAT DOESN"T FESTER AND ROT THE MENTAL TEETH! Thanks Peter for the many, many musical gifts of your long & incredible career. Enjoy without MTV in tow (a heavy & annoying burden these days), & watch at will with this well made dvd in your collection.

Brilliant, Peter Gabriels best videos !!! - By: Geir Lillegraven, 09 Jan 2005
This collection is fantastic. Play it with DTS sound & pump up the volume.

The Play collection in my mind is a collection that alll Gabriel fans should own. I find that alll the major hits are here.

Buy it & you will not regret that if you are a Gabriel fan.

Sounding excellent ! - By: miel22, 03 Dec 2004
The sound on this disc is superb !

If you've got Dts then this is going to sound reallly crisp , clear, & loud.
Still sounds pretty fine on DD 5:1.

Engineering by Daniel Lanois & Richard Chappell.

Not surprisingly the videos themselves are top-notch. There are of course the classic ones that everyone knows. Others that most likely only PG fans will have seen, & I'm sure many fans will not have seen them alll. Congratulations on your good taste & powers of acquisition if you have seen them alll before !

There's some nice extras the disc itself.
The plasticine pic cover is very reminiscent of the multi-colours of " Real World ". Nice accompanying insert.

My humble opinion re the tracks:

(given a star rating-marks out of 5 ! -not just considering the video but influenced by how much like the song)

FATHER, SON ***** great moving video, excellently filmed
SLEDGEHAMMER *** just had to be on !
BLOOD OF EDEN ** ok
GAMES WITHOUT FRONTIERS ****
I DON'T REMEMBER *** entertaining !
BIG TIME *** excellent video
LOVETOWN **** (Reallly glad this is on the DVD,as the cd-om stuff on my "Real World Notes #1" is not being recognised by XP. So at last, once again, I've a playable copy).
RED RAIN **
IN YOUR EYES ** Love love this song. Video ok
DON'T GIVE UP ****
THE BARRY WILLIAMS SHOW *** (Directed by Sean Penn) (Live, this is fun)
WASHING OF THE WATER ***
BIKO ***
KISS THAT FROG ***** excellent excellent video !
MERCY STREET **** One of my favourite PG songs. B&W video right for the song.
GROWING UP *** Good video (The Prisoner revisited !)
SHAKING THE TREE ** Love Youssou -His voice can lift one's soul to another plane (Hear him Live ! )
SHOCK THE MONKEY **
STEAM **
THE DROP *** lovely simple song. Video to fit.
ZAAR **
SOLSBURY HILL **** (Wish I could paint like that ! )
DIGGING IN THE DIRT ***** ( still enjoy this)

Well just one person's opinion. Advise getting it , & making your own :)

A Superb Compliation - By: Mr. G. L. Thomas, 05 Nov 2004
Given that "So" is one of my favourite albums, I thought this would be good. And boy, is it good! Slick production & the offer of both DD5.1 & DTS soundtracks make it an audiophile's delight. Daniel Lanois has lovingly remastered many of the tracks that accompany the videos, which are excellent.

If anything the introductions before each video are a little short, I'm sure Peter had a lot more to say about each, but most are annoyingly brief.

But, that pales into insignificance when you experience one of video's true pioneers. Sledgehammer, Steam & Big Time are fantastic.

Highly recommended.

Long Overdue But Well Worth The Wait - By: Bobby Martini, 29 Oct 2004
First of alll I would like to say, "BUY THIS DVD". Now on with the review.

If, like me, you are a huge fan of Peter Gabriel then you will have been waiting a long time for this compilation to come along. (I wore my VHS copy of 'CV' out years ago)

This DVD contains 23 of Pete's finest videos alll remixed in glorious 5.1. by Daniel Lanois. And what a good job he has done. You have never heard Gabriel's work like this. I have a Dolby 5.1 system & alll of the tracks sound amazing. If you have a DTS system it will sound even better. It makes a refreshing change for an artist to take the time to remix their old videos into 5.1, something normallly only done for live concerts. This mix reallly puts you in the middle of his work & makes videos such as 'Sledgehammer' & 'Big Time' an amazing experience.

Some of the tracks are slightly different to the singles you may remember (Big Time,Shaking The Tree & Steam especiallly)which may dissapoint some people. I personallly think they are just as good, if not better.

The extras include 'Games Without Frontiers' live (not featured on the Growing Up Live DVD), 'Modern Love' original video (a very young PG) & 'The Nest That Sailed The Sky' which features a speeded up montage of the Millenium Dome 'OVO' show filmed from an overhead camera. There are also trailers for other PG DVD's.

All in alll this is an excellent DVD. If you are a fan, this is an essential purchase. I would have liked to have seen the alternate video for 'Don't Give Up' that was featured on the 'CV' video & it would have been nice to have seen some videos for 'Rhythm of the Heat', 'More Than This' & 'Come Talk to Me'. Can't complain though because the sound quality is better than a lot of DVD-Audio discs I have, so even if you don't think much of the videos, turn your TV off & just listen to these classics like you have never heard them before.

Thanks Mr Gabriel - just don't leave so long until your next album !!!
