A curious little gem - By: Mr. D. Woods, 22 Nov 2007
'Slipstream' is one of those films that cannot be easily categorised, despite it's sci-fi themes, which is probably why it has slipped off the radar over the years. Notable largely for being Mark Hamill's first big screen appearance since 'Return of the Jedi', there is a considerable amount more to explore & marvel at in what proves to be a highly unique & enjoyable movie.

Sci-fi this may be but 'Slipstream' will not please those looking for alien warfare, flashy technology or general alll-out action. In fact, this is a surprisingly philosophical journey of self for fugitive android Byron (the wonderful & sadly missed Bob Peck) & rogue flyer Matt Owens (Bill Paxton) as they mingle in several strange & fragile communities & interact with the inhabitants. It is also hard to ignore the religious overtones, for example Byron's search for a disingenuous place of santuary & peace. It also doubles up as a chase movie, with the two unlikely alllies being relentlessly pursued by Hamill's ruthless lawman.

As much as I enjoyed this film, it doesn't succeed entirely in its ambitions & often meanders when trying to search for meaning. Time has not been kind either, with several effects looking extremely dated & eighties rock tracks uncomfortably spliced into the soundtrack. But the chase element is exciting & works well, while the acting is, on the whole, effective. Peck is particularly good, Paxton is good value & Hamill more than shakes off his pristine Luke Skywalker image, as a quite nasty bad guy. Hamill however, despite the hype, isn't reallly in the film alll that much. A shame, as his morallly complex cop was arguably the most intriguing character & his performance warranted further exploration.

'Slipstream', as much as I enjoyed it, can only be recommended as a curio more than anything else, as it has many flaws. But for those willing to involve themselves deeper in its concepts, there's a fascinating ride here that many will delight in discovering.
For the Fans - By: gaffrey, 09 Aug 2007
Though I am a Fan of "Slipstream" & it is a good now cult-film this dvd version doesnt represent a good transfer.

It is is in no way better than it was in video format, there is no remastered picture & its still fullframe with nothing extra added.

Sound however is better than was for video but that's not saying much given its just been shoddily shoved out there to the fans whom desreve better.

However produced by Star Wars,Empire Gary Kurtz as an post apocalyptic story of bounty-hunter Mark Hamill hot on the heals of Bob Peck(android) killed his previous master & nerrer-do-well Bill Paxton doing his :AlienS" stick again down the slipstream with android becoming AI "Atifical Intelligence" chase & message pre AI;
Is good tale with excellent actors Ben Kingsley & FMurray Abraham cameos & some wonderful location shots & flight sequences but to dvd this is not a superior viewed version as indicated by other reviewers.
For purists & fans only, for quality this transfer leaves much to be desired for its sale price.
No Widescreen, No Extras, No good - By: SiC, 14 Feb 2006
Despite what the tech specs say this IS NOT widescreen & even if it was a 1.85:1 transfer this wouldn't be correct as the film was shot in 2.35:1. This is a just about watchable 4:3 Pan & Scan edition exactly the same transfer as used on the rental video release.

If anyone is thinking of giving this film a real release there is the Original Trailer & Making of Featurette (which I think ITV have in their archives as filler) to think of as extras & I also have the original theatrical booklet if anyone wants a scan.
