old rubbish. - By: N. Tate, 04 Dec 2008
Some films age well, this does not.Its a long boring film which gets nowhere. Why a 18 certificate I will never comprehend the censor must have been drunk, probably needed to be to get through it.Even if they offer this free do not be tempted.
Fantastic!! - By: , 20 Aug 2005
I bought this film because I saw about 30 minutes of it 10 years ago on tv, & wanted to see the whole thing. It's 2 hours long, but you don't notice it.

Included is a bonus extras cd which has 2 documentaries, one on the making of the film , & one on Raymond Carver, as well as other bit & pieces.

As if alll that wasn't enough, bundled with the 2 cds, is the book "Short Cuts" which has alll the nine short stories written by Raymond Carver , on which this film was based.

I got my film, but also a whole lot more, so this is fantasic value for my in my humble opinion.

the most unappropriately titles film of all time - By: sammy o'leary, 27 Jan 2004
It's not the sort of film I'd usuallly watch & from watching it I know why.Any film that has a running time of longer than 120 minutes THAT'S TWO FLIPPING HOURS normallly sends me running in the opposite direction at 200 miles per hour.
The premise is good- writer Raymond Carver has a gift for capturing the grinding insanity of life; Altman is a quality & not up his own rear end director; & the cast is understated & brilliant. It starts off reallly well & I was captivated by the performances. Especiallly Lyle Lovett: forget what is said about him being Julia Roberts goofy texan ex, he gets far less praise than he deserves.
The problem is it's just too long. The stories are very similar, & you just want it to end because you know a child could figure out the ending. It could very easily have been cut to two hours & not left me feeling half dead.
Observing hilarious mundanitiies is one thing, but they have to be limited. Otherwise you end up in a very bad & sad place- the same place as this what could could have been a very good film save it's length left me.
No Short Cuts here! - By: Sam, 14 Jul 2003
Absolutely top film (must have inspired 'Magnolia'). Refreshing to see the short stories of the late, great Raymond Carver successfully transfered to screen. Wonderful cast including the unforgettable Julianne Moore as naked artiste.
Among my all-time top ten films! - By: , 28 Feb 2000
I agree with the previous reviewer: Robert Altman's 'Short Cuts' is a majestic, engrossing film - among his best movies, in my humble opinion. Even though it's three hours long & follows a wide variety of characters, it never becomes boring (unlike Paul Thomas Anderson's extremely similar recent film, 'Magnolia', which looks messy in comparison with the mastery of 'Short Cuts').

The film truly does justice to the collection of Raymond Carver short stories upon which it's based, though I was surprised to realise, when I read Carver's 'Short Cuts' collection, that the original stories weren't alll interconnected. This film also features some great character acting - Tim Robbin's sleazy, corrupt policeman is perhaps the finest among some very fine roles.
