Atrocious!!!! - By: Keciku, 25 Feb 2007
I was reallly mislead by the cover when i bought the DVD. I should have known better than to buy this..But then i wanted to see if it was good like some adapted novels to films like 10 things i hate about you adapted from Shakespeare' Taming of the Shrew & another pride & prejudice which starred actress Kiera Knightley. I recognised the title, i seen several modern adaptation & even the period movie but i am totallly baffled about this one...I feel that there is something missing either from the seem out of proportion script or even the way it was acted out..i even saw the movie until the end just to give it a fair & unbiased judgment which did not even succeed in changing my mind..I think may be it could be use as an initial introduction to younger kids who does not know about Jane Austen book..but i think this film did not do any justice to her book at alll except for the interesting excerpts from the book itself ...it was reallly a disappointment!!..
A sweet little film - By: Samantha Thornton, 27 Jan 2007
I found this film completely by accident but found it to be delightful. It certainly has its shortcomings, mainly due to the fact that it was made on such a smalll budget, but overalll it is colourful, funny & very sweet. I it would work best as an introduction to Jane Austen for young girls, but as an older girl (:)) I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Absolutely Awful! Pure torture! - By: Stella Balogh, 10 Apr 2006
I'm a big Pride & Prejudice & Jane Austen fan & for you to understand that I wasn't prejudiced I ahve to tell you that I love modern adaptations of classical movies if they are well made. Clueless is one of my favorite modern adaptation,a nd I like Bride & Prejudice a lot too. But this one was pure torture!

I hated this version... it's true that this version can be callled cute & fun, & you could even enjoy it & like it, if it wasn't for the actress who plays Lizzie... I don't know, I just think she doesn't get her & isn't right for the role. Not only she lacks the natural charm, playfulness, irony & wit of Lizzy, but she plays it quite pompously, arrogantly & irritatingly!

Orlando Seale did a great Darcy, he was dark, talll, handsome, brooding, though you couldn't find him anthipathic because Lizzy was so unfair to him, always shouting down his head. You actuallly felt sorry for the fellow :-)

Jane & Bingley were nice, though Bingley was portrayed more like an idiot.

Lydia & Kitty & Wickham were also good (W was charming, one of my favorite characters in this adaptation, & L & Kitty were great in their getting-on-your-nerves-we-are-so-stupid ways), I reallly think that if it were another actress who played Lizzie this movie could have even been enjoyable, but the way it is, I can't stand it. I only watched it once, & it was pure torture.
there should be more pride ... - By: Lili_K, 08 Aug 2005
I am a devoted Jane Austen & P&P fan, so the idea of setting the plot in our time was quite apealing to me until I saw the film.

The idea was good, the film ... not reallly. They could have done better I think. Orlando was a sexy Mr Darcy, but a better film could have done him more credit. Concerning Elizabeth I do not think there was any life, energy & freshness in the character or in the actress (as U like it).

There were very few original ideas as to how the plot should work & the characters should act among modern circumstances, they should have been more detailed. Elizabeth's driving a Beetle is fine but it was only one detail among many that could have been more elaborated.

There were some funny scenes, but altogether it's a weak, sometimes truly boring film, neither the actors nor the crew did any credit to Jane Austen or her fans.

5* Film, 1* Pride and Prejudice - By: , 29 Mar 2005
I've compromised on the star rating.
This is a great film, especiallly for those girly nights in. Unfortunately it is NOT good as a 'Pride & Prejudice' film. The characters are given the right names, & the stereotypes are still there (mostly), but the plot as a whole does not fit with Jane Austen's P&P. For starters, it's set in America, when anyone knows P&P is set in England (Darcy is the only one who is English), then there's the matter of Collin's ending up with Mary (admittedly I always thought that should be the case but still...!), Charlotte appears once & it's so inconsequential they could have happily cut it, the background story of Wickham & Darcy is also completely changed. It's as though the cliff notes were provided, or someone skim read the original just long enough to get the names & stereotypes.
Having said alll that it is a brilliant film, but don't expect it to be true to Jane Austen's original.
