Super gory 1980's no budget gem - By: Mr. Jonathon T. Beckett, 22 Oct 2008
This is clearly a film made by horror/sci-fi fans for horror/sci-fi fans, & its a delight from start to finish. Theres no plot to speak of as such, just a smalll group of family members & their friends terrorised by a nasty flesh eating alien that multiplies as it consumes.
The alien is wonderful, a sort of cross between Audrey from Little Shop Of Horrors & a malicious muppet. There are some great bloody scenes as it severs heads, & munches on various human body parts. The hero of the piece is a kid with a love of movie monsters, who keeps a clear head & uses his ingenuity to defeat the monster. In between the alien attacks we get some slightly surreal conversations between the family members, including one discussing the mystefying lack of ceramic simians(??)
The unknown cast alll perform admirably, theres a typicallly 80's synth soundtrack, & its relatively short running time brings to mind various 1950's B-movies.
The poor picture/sound quality doesnt matter one jot, just travel back in time to the 1980's & imagine your renting this out from your local video rental shop.
An excellent film, a triumph of imagination over lack of money. 4 out of 5
Strange - By: Bakuryuu Tyranno, 26 Dec 2006
Anyway, the movie mostly takes place inside of a house. It has more preliminary victims than most horror movies before they introduce the main cast. The house is invaded by fish/tadpole-like aliens, & a larger alien that has three mouths & two very frail limbs, but somehow manages to break down doors.

Damn, I've been staring at the screen for a few minutes now, & I don't reallly know what else to say. I guess that's it.

I've just watched this movie & to be honest, I don't know what to make of it. It's very weird, even by the standards of things I usuallly watch.

Still, I didn't feel like it was a waste of time & I was in a bad mood to begin with since sometimes my DVD player takes many attempts to actuallly start working, so taking that into consideration, overalll I think I should give it a positive score.
what a gem! - By: , 26 Feb 2004
I watched this film last night in Zombie Club (refuge for like-minded movie geeks with an unhealthy obsession for BAD horror films). I, like my ZC contemporaries, were mightily impressed. Vipco's presentation is awful (full screen / video quality - eugh!), but then again what's new?! The special effects, & indeed the whole film looked better than it should on its obvious micro-budget. But the best thing about the movie is the little kid (whose name I forget). Not only is he a wonderfully natural little actor, but his character kicks serious ass - better than anything the adult characters seem to achieve. If you like trashy b-movies from late 70's / early 80's, see it. But please, wait if you can, bacause apparently Blue Underground are gonna release this little baby PROPERLY, as it deserves.
The worst effects and continuity - a b-movie masterpiece - By: , 05 Mar 2001
This is bad. It's not Wild Wild West bad, it's a different kind of bad. The kind where you can't get enough off something. Vipco is quite possibly the worst studio ever for making films, but each of their titles is refreshingly awful. The Deadly Spawn can hold its head high amongst the worst opposition out there, & win hands down. Predictable, with the cheapest effects you'll ever see & the worst continuity (just watch the tent in the very first scene & you'll understand), but truely original in it's tackiness. B-movie horror at it's very best. The sad thing is that the people who made it must have thought they'd made a sure fire winner. I can only say thankyou for not having any pride in your work!
Entertaining 80's B-sci-fi movie but awfully presented - By: , 18 Feb 2001
I bought this dvd because I have a faint spot in my heart for sci-fi B-movies,particulary those from the 70's & 80's.... However 'the deadly spawn' must be classified somewhat as a dissapointment:and REMEMBER I have faint spot for this stuff,so I'm being modest here ! It's not reallly the movie to blame:Within the first 90 seconds someone bites it & generallly it's jolly good fun!:your cliche asteroid-hits-earth-brings along ugly nasty fellow-who wreaks havoc-thing... There are some great monster effects in here but then,at the other side ,the asteroid crash could have come out of 'PLAN 9 from..' There's a abundance of gore if that's what you seek But my greatest grudges against this dvd is it's presentation:It's 4:3 only alert & the digital mastering is awfull;as if it was not there. Add to this a MONO-only soundtrack & the fact it only lasts about 75 minutes.. I played it on a ace setup at a friend of mine & it was a dull experience... Only for fans then...
