A delight - By: Caroline Holland, 09 Sep 2008
Shirley valentine is a great film in which a married woman, who has children living away from home becomes involved in a life alone & bored at home as a house wife. Her husband wrapped up in his own world of going to work, coming home & waiting for his tea. Shirley goes back to remembering the good old days her & husband use to have & now this alone dose not keep her from searching for something more happier & exciting. So this takes on a jourany were shirley goes to greece to find her old self & her once youth. This film reallly makes you feel for shirley but also its true meaning that you dont have to travel to get back your happines. A delightfull film that wil leave you in tears of sadness & tears of happiness as shirley & joe begin their jourany.
Escape from the reality of midlife...redefine it !!! - By: Jay, 14 Dec 2007
The reality of Shirley Valentine is that it's very grounded in reality. Every moment of the film is fraught with ambiguity, moral & emotional. Shirley's trip to Greece & subsequent adventures are not Halllmark moments. She realizes quite clearly that her fantasies are superimposed on the necessities of reality. She doesn't marry a tycoon: she gets a waitress job. She realizes from the get-go that her relationship with Costas is a good-natured fraud. The ending of the movie doesn't answer any questions except "How does Shirley feel right at this moment in time?" This is not a film about escaping to a fantasy. It's about finding a reality that works for who you reallly are. Every human being on earth who's dissatisfied with their life should watch this film.
Excellent - By: S. B. kiely-jones, 29 Oct 2007
An excellent transfer from the stage to the screen - apparently they wanted Cher to take the lead - thank God they stuck with the star that it was intended for.
This is a first class feel good movie that we can alll relate to - do you have the courage to make a change in your life? Be like Shirley!
I agree that the DVD version is poor technicallly but for older films with less likelihood of shifting large volume they aren't likely to make much of an effort - bat that's capitalism for you. I still love this & it's on my pile of DVDs that are earmarked for watching whilst doing the ironing - my seal of approval for repeat viewing quality!!!

First class film, totally ruined. - By: M. Williams, 10 Aug 2007
A great film, but ruined as the print has been hacked & altered to appeal more to US television viewers. Buyers should be made aware of this before they purchase that this is NOT the original version as shown in the cinema.
A VHS format bought from a car boot sale on a damp Sunday morning would be a better purchase.
A great movie - ruined - By: Steve Ayres, 04 Aug 2007
As others have said...

Shirley Valentine was - is - a great British comedy/romance/drama. Unfortunately ruined by Paramount. The DVD is full screen, with no extras, but most shocking of alll the region 2 DVD is the dubbed for US audiences version.

Why Paramount bothered I reallly don't know; years later I'm still waiting & hoping they will re-release this movie as it ought to be seen.
