best cop show ever anywhere in the world. - By: T. Krings, 27 May 2008
This has to be the best edited box set ever: great restauration work on the originals, bonus stuff that includes new & old interviews, features & whole episodes of other series in which Thaw / Waterman guest stared. Perfect. And of course, The Sweeney is the best cop show ever anywhere in the world.

To be honest there is very little I can write in this review that you won't already know if your considering buying or at this moment are actuallly purchasing The Sweeney (The Complete Series) as you'll be aware
of just how influential & how ground breaking this show is.

For the younger buyers though that may have heard mention of The Sweeney & be curious about the show they've probably heard great things about the truth is... it's alll true.

See I remember watching the Sweeney in the late 70's as the series was coming to an end & it was always the highlight of my week, being alllowed to stay up late especiallly to watch this show.

Growing up & getting older I've seen many cop shows, & noticed the subtle nods, parodies & copying of what the Sweeney did those many, many years ago & for me nothing has ever managed to surpass the Sweeney.

What makes the Sweeney so good, & in my opinion so much bettr than the majority of it's modern day contemporaries is in not just the writing but the casting & acting.

The Sweeney can be at times dark given that the Flying Squad are dealing with some of the most dangerous & ruthless criminals in London, but this is counter balanced well with humour & pathos, which isn't over done but subtle enough so that it does not take away from the drama.

In the late John Thaw & Dennis Waterman you have two leading actors that seem to gel & make the camoradery between the duo of Reagan & Carter more believable, added into that Garfield Morgan as their Governor Chief Inspector Haskins, & the cream of British acting past & present in guest roles (which due to the excellent writing team are not mere cameo roles but structured & sometimes complex characters) & you have just under one hour of classic british drama.

This is a must buy if your a fan of The Sweeney (ovbiously) but also if your a fan of great police/drams programs, within this 53 episode box set you will see just what modern tv schedulding is missing & why when people say "They dont make them like they used to" they aren't kidding.

SHUT IT - By: Fatboy, 07 Oct 2007
I agree with the others who have had the clear inserts come unstuck, I found the best thing was to put a little blob of superglue on each of the corners of the inserts & up to now they have not come unstuck.

I was a little young to have seen the Sweeney when it was first shown but I have seen the odd episode on Sky & it reallly got me hooked.

The episodes are SOOOOOO well written & SOOOOOO well acted, the villains that are used in the show are so believable & reallly reallly do look like a real villain, a credit to the writers.

This was written in a time when political correctness was not an issue (I wish it still was this way) Certain episodes see villains been chased down the street with guns in their hands, this is not something you would see now. The Sweeney is made alll the better with the superbly chosen locations which give the episodes that extra edge.

Included here are every episode of The Sweeney that was ever made. This is TV at its very best. Well worth every penny!

Its interesting to see alll the young upcoming actors who appeared on The Sweeney & then later went on to other things, just see how many you can spot!

I would also recommend if you purchase this, to buy the DVD callled REGAN, this was the pilot episode for The Sweeney. It is superb & of the same high calibre of The Sweeney.
"Your nicked" - By: Batey, 28 Jun 2007
I remember the Sweeney from my youth, it seems to have improved with age a real breath of fresh air compared to todays increasingly politicly correct world. The digitallly re-mastered picture & sound & alll the extras seal the deal, sweet.
Life On Mars - the real thing - By: Dale Bradford, 15 Mar 2007
Growing up in the 1970s, The Sweeney was must-see TV. As so much of it was filmed on location, the buildings, shops, cars & fashion that make up the background to the action provide glimpses of a vanished time when Britain was a bleak, depressing place - but it's fascinating to see it alll again as it was. And the remastering, particularly on the audio, is first class. What prompted me to buy this was seeing Life On Mars, & realising how much that modern series had been inspired by this classic slice of 1970s drama. For £40, this box set is a blag - I paid a lot more but it was worth every penny.
