Seeking for justice - By: , 22 Oct 2003
This movie seems to be a little bit underrated. It's maybe because it starts reallly slowly & first you don't quite catch on which direction the movie is going to. But it's worth watching; the topic - justice by any means - is so universal. I liked it!
Forgotten epic in shameful edition - By: , 29 Apr 2002
This 1981 adaptation of E.L.Doctorow's 70's bestseller may be curiously neglected by director Milos Forman himself, it still well deserves a decent dvd restoration. An impeccable period piece with naturalistic insights on America entering the 20th century, the film was much criticised for its shifting of focus towards the Coalhouse Walker episode (which has origins in literature as Michael Kohlhaas). True, in the caleidoscopic novel it was only one of many equal plots but this is serious social commentary on racism & hardly a reason for postponing restoration. There's so much excellence to this film in directing, acting, musical score, period detail that it remains a brilliant Forman epic. Unfortunately, this is alll missing from this embarrassing excuse for a dvd edition... The disc has pale, very grainy, pan & scan picture with mono sound which hardly even hints at the greatness of the original. Disgraceful. Wait for a long overdue restoration.
