Fun Viewing - By: Ms. B. Williams, 15 May 2006
The series is based around Thomas Magnum (Tom Selleck) who is ex Navy intelligence & a Vietnam war veteran who decides to set up business as a freelance private investigator in the Hawaiian islands. Each week has a different story of Magnum attempting to crack cases sometimes assisted by his old war buddies TC & Rick. He is based at the estate of millionaire writer Robin Masters where he stays as a guest much to the disdain of Higgins the security officer who sees Magnum as a rather large pain in the neck!
Magnum was one of those shows that I watched as a child & remember reallly enjoying but as is the case sometimes, watching an old show as an adult can sometimes not live up to the memory that you had of it previously. This is not the case with Magnum. The relationship between Magnum & Higgins is hilarious as they try & find ways to get one-up on each other. The series is set in beautiful scenery which adds to each episode. The only downside I can find with the series is that it does look a bit dated but I think it only makes it more fun to see how tight Magnum's shorts can actuallly get! There are no extras as such on this collection but there is a written synopsis at the start of each episode telling you the plot & also telling you the original air-date for that particular show which I though was a nice touch. This is not the case for the second series. One thing I found particularly interesting which I didn't know is that the famous Magnum theme tune was actuallly different up until the middle of the first season. Reallly worth watching. Look out for cameos from now famous actors in early roles.
magnum force! - By: galangal, 18 Sep 2005
what a revelation! as a child I used to have to sit through this show every week because my parents were avid viewers & I wasn't alllowed access to the remote control. as a result I hated it! but now as an adult I thought I'd buy it & see what it was alll about, mostly on the strength of the reviews at Amazon. & very glad that I did too! the interaction of the down to earth Magnum & the fussy Higgins is worth the price of the DVD by itself. a modern Odd Couple! throw in the car, the scenery, TC & Rick & you've got a classic engaging series. not to mention Magnum in his Speedos for the 'Iron Man' episode, that's worth every penny at double the price!!!

I bought this set thinking it would provide me with little more than a few nostalgic chuckles, as has regretfully been the case with other 80s shows. But Magnum is class. The interaction between Magnum & the other main characters (particularly the brilliant Higgins) is excellent, generating genuine laughs & fondness. The show is happy to mix such light-hearted laughs with more serious elements, & some of the episodes in which Magnum & the team revisit their memories of Vietnam are quite moving - especiallly if the time in which the show was first aired is considered. But first & foremost Magnum is top-notch entertainment; classic detective stories (the noir-style voiceover is inspired) with a tropical twist, driven forward by a talented & eminently likable ensemble. Even 25 years on, every woman wants to be with Magnum; every man wants to be him. Even given the tash.
Magnum PI is great-but be warned! - By: strawdog, 24 Oct 2004
Magnum Pi is the best tv show of the eighties, & Selleck was perfect as the moustache wearing PI. Together with Higgins, Rick & TC he beat the bad guys in the beautiful setting of Hawaii. What made the show work was the fact that you as the audience just knows that Selleck is just as nice as his character of Magnum, & that makes for very comfortable viewing. The dvd has every episode of the first season, alll looking very good thanks to dvd quality. One thing Magnum fans must be aware of though is that the region 1 version (American release) has bonus episodes from future seasons, including the Simon & Simon episode. The region 2 version for the UK has just the episodes from season 1. And so it is probably best to get region 1 if your player can play them.

All in alll a first class release, however a Selleck commentary would have been bliss. Oh well...
