Pretty good series - Poor transfer - By: Tim DK, 16 Dec 2007
An interesting & fairly gripping crime show from Michael Mann - particularly when the action focuses on Torello's quarry, Ray Luca, as opposed to the trite domestic scenes. The video quality is rather poor however. Fairly gritty, with compression artifacts clearly visible. These & interlacing errors became quite distracting unfortunately - looked a bit like VHS at times.
A Real Crime - By: Joe Dorward, 21 Oct 2007
I watched this series in the Eighties when it first aired, & loved it.
The show seemed to work then, but I suppose it's me who's changed. It doesn't work for me now - the dialogue & plot are way too 'obvious' & the characterisations are little more that stereotypes. Sometimes - you just can't go back.
A TV Classic! - By: mickram23, 07 Apr 2007
I have to admit I'd never even heard of this show until I picked up the DVD's on a whim. As a recent convert to American crime dramas ( C.S.I, Law & Order etc.) I have a lot of catching up to do & this show is probably the cream of the crop! Hailing from the mid 80's, this is a pretty violent show (although a lot of the violence is (semi!)off screen) & this would usuallly turn me off from watching it but the programme is just so well made with some superb performances from the main actors & great atmosphere. The story follows Lietenant Mike Torello as he persues ruthless gangster Ray Luca from the streets of Chicago to mob run Las Vegas & in the process Luca raises from street punk to crime king-pin.
Set in the 60's the recreation of the period is amazing & overalll this is real classic TV. A must see!!
As for the dvd's themselves, unfortunately there are no extras at alll (which is a pity as I'd love to have seen interviews with cast members etc)but instead consider that you are getting the pilot episode & 20 episodes of great drama & I don't think anyone will be too disappointed.
Dennis Farina's finest hour - By: H. meiehofer, 06 Aug 2006
Worth getting just to see Dennis Farina excel. I think it is realistic (Well how wiould I know, I wasn't in Vegas in the 60's) Can be a bit ludicrous at points like gangsters surviving an atom bomb test, but overalll worth the money. Quite fascinating to spot future big stars in supporting roles
Finally This Classic Is On DVD - By: Paul Chapman, 03 Aug 2004
I never thought i would see this day !!
Probably released due to an overview of Michael Mann's career, Anchor Bay once again deliver.
Released straight after the end of Miami Vice, Crime Story takes a completely different direction to it's Florida based relation.
Set in 1960's Chicago, this series focuses on the rise of mob boss Ray Luca (Anthony Dennison) & the efforts of Lt Mike Torello to bring him to justice.
An excellent series with a highly authentic look, excellent storylines & a cool soundtrack played in part by Todd Rungren.
An essential purchase !!
