Filmed in the early nineties this was one of the first computer game to movie adaptations that I ever watched & it still ranks as one of the worst that I have seen. What little plot that the film has revolves around M. Bison, a South-East Asian dictator capturing some hostages & the Allied Nations mission to attempt to retrieve them. Throw in some sub-plots about revenge & con-artists, some lacklustre special effects, some awful casting & badly choreographed fights & what you get is a movie that fails to deliver for both fans of the game & general action movie fans.
There are very few redeeming features to this film but I would say that Raul Julia is one of them, giving a brilliant pantomime performance of the villainous General M. Bison but even his performance cannot rescue this film from a dreadful script a god-awful plot. Many of the characters from the game seem rather shoehorned in & have some rather odd characterization as well as some rather dreary performances by the actors playing them. This film isn't even in the so bad its good stable of film making, it is simply bad & serves as a poor memorial to the great Raul Julia.

This is an awful film; just watched it for the first time the other night; I am glad I had never seen; this has to be one of the worst films I have ever seen; I must say that I dislike computer games that are turned into the movies but this is truly painful to view; bad acting, action & direction is alll to be seen here, makes you wonder reallly the mentality of some hollywood script writers; I could go on but theres no point wasting anymore time reviewing this; awful....
An Insult to Street Fighter - By: C-man, 29 Jun 2007 I you were a movie director & you decided to make a Street fighter movie. What would you do? Would you:
(a) Pack it full of action, use little story, use characters appropiately & aim the movie at the teens that play the game. The characters from the game & the tournament involved could be used as reaseon to deliver the best form of brutality & violence, in relation to the game.
OR
(b) Would you thro in a rediculous story, tarnish every character in the game & present us with some of the most bog standed action sequences imaginable.
Well, if you chose (a), you'd be like me, wondering where everything went wrong. As an everyday movie it would still be dreadful, but probably have more dignity. But it's the way the Street Fight legacy is used so cheaply that leaves a sick feeling in my throat. Take Ken & Ryu, the biggest names in the game. They're two teenagers here who are RUBBIsh at fighting. What about Sagat? You know, the hard as nails, cold as ice, "perfect for ultimate Movie big bad guy" kickboxer? He's BARELY even present here. And along with Ken, Ryu, Vega, (where the hell was Bullrog?!) & everyone else in the game look like a cast for a cirus or carnival. And for one last kick in the ballls, Van Damme plays the ALL AMERICAN Guile. Of course, the Americans WOULD save the day (sigh) but when it's being played by a European it DOESN'T WORK!!!! Every representation here is so bad, from the dreadful Guile, to the virtual non-existance of main character Chunli, Ryu, Ken, Vega & Sagat, to the laughable M.Bison. Give this a miss.
And I LIKE Van Damme.

A great film! Sure, it's not based on the usual fighting style of the Street Fighter games, but if it was...it'd be boring! Instead we get the tough & excellent variety of characters such as Guile, Ken & Ryu, Vega, Cammy et al taking sides in a simple war of good vs evil.
There are plenty of nods to the game like some of the scenes which are fighting locations in the game & also the special moves & costumes.
It's done justice to the game whilst also being a great action film with good acting, intersting story lines & a good roundup of actors!
Go buy it, as said before, it's not Oscar material, but it's a great action DVD for the collection!
Potential that wasn't quite there - By: Foxbatslayer89, 30 Apr 2006 Street Fighter 2 had the potential to be a great movie & much of the cast was an inspired choice but sadly the script let it down big time for it was too weak. Another thing that let the film down was the sheer number of characters from the game in the movie for most of them had very little to do & so were wasted. Had the number of characters been reduced to say six in number then perhaps there could have been far more character development & a far deeper story line. As it stands though it could have been something far more than it turned out to be.
