Great fun - By: Trevor Willsmer, 07 Feb 2007
Fanfan la Tulipe, in its 1952 Gerard Philippe incarnation, is a highly enjoyable romp that alternates between the bawdy & the witty as it follows the adventures of its marriage-averse hero as he joins the army after Gina Lollabrigida's fake gypsy predicts he will marry the King's daughter as the seven-years Lace War rages pointlessly in the background. It's got energy to spare as it races from one action scene or comic setpiece to another, & while there's nothing particularly original on display, it's done with such enthusiasm it's hard to dislike. It's also the only film I've seen where Lollabrigida plays a genuinely likeable character, & quite charming she is too.

The UK DVD comes with the original black & white version & a surprisingly good colorized version.
Rollicking "french" western - By: Paul L. McKaskle, 02 Feb 2006
Gerard Philipe is an amorous peasant who joins the Army to avoid a shotgun wedding. He has been told by a "fortune teller" (Gina Lollabridida) that he is to marry the kings daughter. When the army is encamped near the chateau where the king is staying, he sets off to find the princess to whom he thinks he is destined to wed. Lots of swordplay (including a rescue of Madame de Pompadour from bandits who gives him a silver "tulipe" as a reward, hence Fanfan's moniker) & a horseback chase worthy of the best american westerns. Wonderful humour throughout. One of the best movies I've ever seen & after 50 years of being unavailable, it has finallly been released on DVD. Alas, Philipe died a couple of years later at a tragicallly young age. The DVD is highly recommended.
