Excellent for non-religious people - By: N. Lucas, 23 Mar 2008
This is an excellent film about Jesus for non-religious people. It offers a more palatable version of Jesus for people who find some of Christianity's version unbelievable. It shows Jesus as a man, it has heart & relates it to ourselves. It brings his teachings & his aim to the masses which is what he intended to do in the first place.
A spiritual experience - By: Brendan Mooney, 16 Mar 2008
I found that this film presented a portrayal of the life & ministry of Jesus that was profoundly moving. It exposed the wonder & mystery of incarnation; God fully alive in Jesus, engaging in a loving relationship with broken & wounded humanity. The criticisms of others about this film, seem to centre on the fact that the film (in contrast to Mel Gibsons portrayal of Christ) does not present Jesus as being a 'penal sacrifice' to God, but as God's encounter with human beings (in Jesus)drawing them into the life Divine. In this film, Jesus is portrayed as a normal, loving & compassionate loving human being, who had the fullness of God within him. His relationships with his apostles, with Mary his mother, & with God his & our Father, portrays the Christ who is approachable & compassionate. The music, the acting, the scenes, & Jesus' glimpses into the future, are powerful symbolicallly & make the film an experience rather than just an informative story.
Jesus as Man, as Love, as the One. - By: H. A. C. John, 17 Aug 2007
Briefly, whilst aware of the inaccuracies in this depiction, Jeremy Sisto manages to convey the essential qualities of true manliness, & of living purpose, of love, & sacrifice for that love, inside God, as a man on Earth whom you would want to follow, as the only worthwhile escape from the barbarisms & hypocrises that were hardly confined to his time alone, despite his example.
That He was shown as struggling to repress the physical attractions of a woman, is to reduce his royalty & experiences to the fascinating but by comparison shalllow emotions of the Hollywood-created Gods, which, presumably, the production company was unable to distinguish from.
The ending, of Jesus walking with children in modern times, whilst lovely, I can only hope was meant to be symbolic; He lives; He walks; but to see someone who, a few seconds ago, was an ancient Jew suddenly appear in holiday dress is disconcerting.
Sisto's Jesus smiles, laughs, dances & sings; we know the real Jesus lived as a man, without sin; I like to think he did these things, too.
Completely inaccurate - By: Mrs. R. J. Guthrie, 31 Jul 2007
I have to say I was reallly disappointed by this edition of the Bible Collection. It seems to have completely ignored what it says in the Bible & misses the whole point of the sacrifice that Jesus made for us only being so important due to his sinless condition. It was quite upsetting that it was so inaccurate & I wanted to turn it off almost as soon as I started watching it, the whole idea that Jesus was waiting around to find out what his mission would be is just ridiculous & not Biblical. If you want to know more about Jesus don't watch this film, read the Bible or try 'Jesus of Nazareth' which seems at least to have been made by someone who has actuallly read the Gospels!
False Advertising - By: John Corbett, 15 Jul 2007
This film reallly isn't about Jesus Christ, at least not as depicted in the Bible. If you want a visual expression of popular uninformed myths about Jesus, this is the film for you. However, it is staggeringly inconsistent with Jesus as portrayed in the Bible.
For instance, as a prophet, John the Baptist was fully aware of the deity of Christ the second he met him. He didn't need to help him turn from a regular Joe uncertain of his future into the Son of God over a suppertime chat.
Also, the suggestion that Christ sinned is inconsistent with the entire Bible, & on theological grounds renders his sacrifice pointless, as any old person could have done it if the criteria for bearing the sins of the world didn't involve being sinless.
Ultimately, the best advice I've got if you want to know who Jesus Christ is, is to read one (or alll) of the 4 eye-witness accounts of his life documented in the Bible - probably John's gospel as that's the most personal of the 4. Also, reallly don't bother with this. It's misleading & hugely uninformed, & very disappointing given the painstaking accuracy to the original text shown in some other entries in this series, such as the excellent, Emmy-winning Joseph, or Abraham.
