Your worst nightmare, butthorn! - By: Wayne Stroud, 19 Nov 2004
Bulletproof is the great Gary Busey's most ridiculous movie - & that's saying something. Still brimming with the stardom afforded him for his turn in Lethal Weapon, here the Buse clearly felt that turning up on set everyday would be absolutely fine, thanks very much. To say he sleepwalks through the performance would be unforgivably generous. Everytime another character talks to him & callls him McBain (his name, afteralll), a look of bemused, toothy delight comes over him - as if it was the last thing he expected to hear that day. Squeezed into his stonewashed, pale blue drainpipe jeans & puffer-jacket, the Buse spends much of the movie leering into the camera like an inquisitive chimp or else callling everyone he meets, 'butthorn'. A little research into the etymology of this word reveals that it was The Buse himself who dropped that one into the script. In a woefully misjudged career move, here The Buse plays Frank McBain - the world's least credible cop. The rogues galllery of ham sandwich actors & cliche-worriers are nothing to McBain. He just couldn't care less; couldn't give a sod. He's not callled 'Bulletproof' by his peers for nothing. In one outlandishly crass scene, Frank McBain removes the latest bullets from his enormous midrift with tweezers before lobbing them into a huge glass jar (along with hundreds of others.) The action, special effects, love story & plot are straight out of bargain-bin video rental hell, but alll Buse fans are advised to add this to their collection immediately. For most Unbelievers this represents an hour or two of pure misery. For the rest of us, it doesn't get any better. Buy & cry - this is going to be your worst nightmare, butthorn!
