For my mother - a film to treasure - By: Julian E. R. Allen, 18 Jun 2007
I am dedicating this review to my dear late mother. She & I always loved to witness the quiet craftmanship of acting, directing & photography which unfold here.

Of course it is wonderful to see the thoughtful & totallly convincing performances of the great actors, Lillian Gish & Bette Davis - however the quiet dignity of this work does not alllow you to dwell on the performers as stars. From the opening moments when sepia gives way to colour - bringing us gently from past to present - this is a movie that captivates & enchants.

There is gentle humour & heart wrenching pathos in this little story - many memorable images are captured. Libby mourns her physical infirmities - Sarah takes strength from her little rituals - talking to the pictures of loved ones long departed.

The film is surely due a UK release on DVD - in the mean time catch it if you can at the National Film Theatre one day - or perhaps a repertory cinema.
