Good licks, but flawed presentation - By: moonwatcher, 29 Jul 2007
This DVD is, fairly obviously, a transfer of a video. Nothing wrong in that, & the transfer's been done well enough, but the "linear" nature of a video is evident alll the way through. Gurman introduces each lick, plays it, explains it in tedious detail & you're done (sometimes he'll play it a second time). There's no beat or metronome click to let you get the phrasing of each lick, & each is over so fast that you need to replay it a few times to get to know it... but there's no easy way to do that. When he explains a lick, it's extremely slowly, & (again because there's no click), it's hard to relate what he's explaining to the way he first played it. Finallly, he switches keys from lick to lick & doesn't make any reference to how they might be moved around the neck or played in different positions.
So, to sum up: it's not a bad purchase if you just want some inspiration, can play reasonably well by ear anyway & can get it second hand. But there are better products out there.
50 licks blues style - By: L. Lizaitis, 06 Apr 2006
This is exactly the stuff I would love to be able to play. Quiet a few licks requier fast finger work so it's not reallly for complete beginers. You also need to know the blues scale to play the licks, but if you fancy the challlenge or have been playing for a while there's lots here to get your teeth into. Listening to the guy brings a big smile to my face that makes you want pick your guitar up & play. A tab sheet is included which helps you break down whats going on in alll the licks. I've been playing for 8 months & this is reallly insparational to me. It's the kind of stuff that makes playing the guitar so rewarding. If blues is your thing you should love the sound this guy can produce.
Good - By: Mr. D. M. Pickett, 19 Dec 2005
I have been playing guitar for about 4 years now & wanted to brush up on some licks & this book definatly has them, i wouldnt say this book was for the beginner guitarist but if u know the blues scale than its worth it for sure. However I did find that some of the licks sound quite similar. There are three different sections i think which covers turnarounds (end of solo kinda feel), double stop licks & more. If you live in the UK you will need multi regional dvd player or it will play in blacknwhite (which doesnt reallly matter). so alll in alll quite good reallly, oh & the booklet is a bit crappy but so what
