DEFINITION OF ACTION ADVENTURE! - By: Adam Jackson, 27 May 2008
The original trilogy alll together in one FANTASTIC box set - the 4th disc being a stand alone special features Bonus DVD (Visual FX, stunts, character development, story arc etc). Very informative & detailed.
3 x Great movies; Raiders Of The Lost Ark (1981) - still the best! Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom (1984) - dark & moody! & Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade (1989) - closer in tone to the first film but perhaps slightly too comedic??
Great plots, memorable characters, fantastic action setpieces (some of the very best gun fights, fist fights & car chases ever filmed), stunning locations, stunning cinematography/editing & some truly awesome visual effects ( All 3 movies have supernatural elements, most prevalent in Raiders Of The Lost Ark).
And alll this under the masterful direction of a Spielberg firing on ALL cylinders, & with a career defining performance from Harrison Ford that makes for one of the most engaging heroic characters ever created!
These are perfect films for alll generations, although it should be pointed out that Raiders & Temple Of Doom are quite bloody in places, with some farly violent scenes - for alll the old fashioned feel, there's no shortage of blood & bullets at times!
Absoluteley no sexual content or any bad language whatsoever, so safe for the grandkids (who alll love a bit of blood & guts!)
Let's also never forget the impressive scores by Hollywood legend, John Williams. The Indiana Jones theme is right up there alongside his other great works such as the Star Wars saga & is every bit as iconic as the James Bond motif.
I've reviewed the new movie on Amazon UK & I thought it was good, better than I expected! Closest to Raiders in tone.
I have to say that I love the packaging to this DVD set, it comes in an absoluteley gorgeous brown case that almost looks like an old book which given the archaeological nature of the movies is highly appropriate.
Perfect Intro for the New Indy - By: Ford Ka, 24 May 2008
This is the perfect choice for Indiana Jones afficionados but not only - there is quite a few billion people around who never had the chance to see the movies before. These three film rank among the best adventure movies of the last half century (OK - they ARE the best ;) so don't think too long but grab at the opportunity to be reallly prepared for the last part of Indiana Jones' adventures.
You get a major handful of extra material thrown in but it is the movies that reallly matter. And they are so fresh & full of live that it is hard to believe it has been a while since Indiana Jones seemed to have retired for good.
Action! Adventure! Indy! - By: Mark Baker, 29 Feb 2008
This four disc set contains three classic action movies & one disc loaded with bonus material.
Up first is "Raiders of the Lost Ark." In it, we meet our hero, archeology professor Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford). Indiana isn't just a classroom professor. When the right opportunity presents itself, he heads out to the field in search of some priceless artifact. This particular time, he's searching for the Jewish Ark of the Covenant. But he's not the only one on the trail. He has to race the Nazi's around the world to uncover its hiding place.
Next is "Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom." Set a couple years before the first movie, Indiana gets stranded in India when an attempt to sell his latest find goes bad. The only way the locals will give him directions out of there is if he retrieves their sacred rock from a nearby temple where a cult uses it in some horrid practices.
Finallly comes "Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade." When Indiana's father (Sean Connery) goes missing, it's up to Indiana to find him & the Holy Grail before the Nazis do.
All three of these movies are fun. They are filled with lots of action, yet the story holds together. "Raiders" is easily the best of the series. Everything was fresh & new here. "Temple of Doom" is the weakest of the lot. It is darker in tone & the story wanders a bit more. Things definitely improve with "Last Crusade." Sean Connery is funny as Indy's dad, & that dynamic makes it seem fresh again.
For years, this set has been the only way to get the classic trilogy on DVD. And that's not a bad thing. Each movie gets its own disc. The set came in both widescreen & full frame editions. I have the widescreen, & the picture looks great. The sound is wonderful as well. All the extras are on the fourth disc. And alll the features are new. The highlight is the two hour documentary on the making of the trilogy. There's plenty of behind the scenes information here. There are also four featurettes that focus more on the music, special effects, stunts, & sound effects.
These movies are pure fun, & that's alll they were trying to be. So if you are looking for a good time at the movies, look up Indiana. And if you are a fan, you'll be quite satisfied with this set.
What hasn't been said about this movie collection.... - By: Mr. Shivraj Gohil, 24 Jan 2008
Being an 80s child, there are certain things in the movie world you just kind of grew up with, Indiana Jones is probably the biggest foundation block of what 80s movies were about. Amazing effects, but not the dodgy CGI we are used to today, but the Indy movies were the last great movies which used actual physical action sequences, sure thing, there are movies which still do it for real, but Indy was the last great. Its a movie the family can watch, kids can take a genuine interest in history after seeing these movies...the directing is superb, the music score is timeless & the story's are as intriguing as anything over the last 50 years of hollywood. I've had this box set for years, but since the 4th film is in post production, the fluids are starting to circulate in me. If anything, now is the time to wait for the boxset which will release in a year or so, containing the 4th movie. In my eyes, this is the greatest movie achievement when it comes to having everything....whether the 4th film can hold this advantage...we shalll see.
Great entertainment! - By: marky_77, 16 Jan 2008
I was lucky enough to pick this box set up for £10.99 about 3 years ago. I did more than a double take too! It contains my alll time favourite movie in Raiders. We alll know how great a film this is with alll it's famous set pieces, great characters & story. The only gripe is the ending for me where the hero doesn't take the scene & is helpless! Although it is some spectacle alll the same. I just wish I could live it alll again as a kid watching it for the first time.
Doom was a totallly different prospect & not necessarily for the better. It's way too dark & was not so enjoyable watching as a kid back then & even now, especiallly as Raiders was how it was, the almost perfect movie. Both Lucas & Spielberg acknowledge it was too dark in the bonus disk. The end of Doom is the best of alll 3 movies however.
Crusade is more fun & easy going than Doom, & the connection between Indy & his dad is light relief after Doom. Good to see some of the cast from Raiders back again. However, I do find that the film suffers from being too comical, may be over compensating for Doom, & lacks the 'grit' & gore of both predecessors.
The bonus disk is just as good as the Star Wars bonus disk. There's plenty of information on alll three Indy films, & like Star Wars, Raiders gets the most attention time wise.
All in alll this trilogy goes down in film history as one of the best out there. We await the aging grey Indy in part 4...
