Magnifico! - By: M. Jones, 04 Apr 2006
Like many of the reviewers, curiosity got the better of me & coupled with a very competitive price I wanted to see how this Canadian trio of rock legends had aged both musicallly & physicallly.
I was big into Rush during my school years & probably peaked at the "Moving Pictures" album, occasionallly hearing some of their later work. I guess we alll get to an age when something like this catches your eye & you delve into a bit of nostalgia to rekindle the old spark.
Believe me this dvd doesn't disappoint; set in the melting pot that is Brazil's Maracana Stadium, the trio open with a blistering version of "Tom Sawyer" to the enthusiastic crowd's manic reception. Believe me I haven't seen that much crowd bouncing since Robbie Williams at Slane Castle in '99.
What strikes me most about this performance, is that these guys have been together for 30 years (Peart joining in 1975 I think) & so the musicianship is not only top-notch, but they are still enjoying every note, every time signature change, & basicallly stretching themselves (and the crowd) to the absolute limit. This is music of the very highest quality, & yes some of the lyrical content is a little dated now (By-Tor & the Snow Dog? Lads....please...no!) but I couldn't turn this off once I started watching it.
The best, & I mean the BEST, thing about this concert is Alex Lifeson's guitar sound - which just booms through the speakers. Super distorted but always in control; just magnificent.
Sound/Vision, 5 stars; nostalgic trip, priceless
Rush - Live In Rio - By: Disappointed, 29 Dec 2005
Did I miss something or has TV just been invented? - you would have thought so with the quality of sound & picture of this DVD & it's overalll production not being even worthy of a 5 year old with a Kodak Box Brownie.
The band live are the best on the planet - without a doubt & this does them no favours or justice. Don't buy it - buy the CD's instead.
Amazing DVD - By: , 29 Dec 2005
I spent my teenage years listening to Rush L.P's, i loved every one up to 'Hold your fire', in which they seemed to change direction & this, basicallly, wasn't for me. A few years ago i decided to get alll their early stuff on C.D.which renewed my passion for this awesome trio.
This DVD is the first i've bought from them & i was reallly knocked out by it, i had forgotten just how brilliant this group is in a live show. Geddy's vocals are excellant, as is his bass & keyboard playing, Alex is a guitar god, & neil is just awesome.
Any one who has been put off buying this DVD after reading other reviews should just go for it, it's a tenner i definately didn't regret spending
Excellent Show - By: James Gabb, 09 Oct 2005
Many people are talking about how the sound quality isn't great on this DVD. Well Rush didn't have enough time after they landed to do a sound check, & many of the sounds had to be "rescued". And for a live show, the audio is amazing anyway. This DVD is fantastic. You can reallly see the enthusiasm of the crowd, & you can actuallly hear them singing to YYZ, an INSTRUMENTAL. The songs were performed brilliantly, with 2112 Overture/Temples of Syrinx & Natural Science reallly standing out. And you have to hand it to Rush, they did start the show with their best known song, Tom Sawyer, a usuallly dangerous move. This DVD is well worth the money, I highly recommend it, & as a bonus you get an excellent documentary as well.
biting the bullet after reading reviews - By: S. Taylor, 27 Sep 2005
after a long abscence of buying any Rush material i finallly decided that it was time i renewed my interest in the band.Idecided that i would like a new live album ( a hard decision after the diappointment of the afore mentioned album ).Online reviews was my only source as Rush fans in my part of the world are very few & far between.
The reviews for the cd were the same as for this dvd,i.e either loved or hated.on listening to the cd for the first time i was in the latter camp....i hated it,way to much noise, not pure Rush that i had been accustomed to listening to.However after reading the sleeve & admiring the problems that the band & crew had to overcome i listened again..... i was full of admiration
the band is edgier, less of a Genesis synth slant ( which is no bad thing ).Anyway yesterday i bought the dvd,i watched it on my laptop (a high end machine )One word....AMAZING,after watching a Foo Fighter dvd last week (sound & vision dodgy ) this one blew me away. How people come to the conclusion that the sound is warped or that there are too many crowd scenes is beyond me,its a LIVE event, with background noise it adds to the event.
Anyway I thought it was amazing,my only regret being that i was unable to see the band on their european leg of the tour, but buying this has been the next best thing, next purchase,Vapor Trails !!
My advice to anyone thinking of getting it,do it buyit here ( £12 or there bouts, can't be bad ).I waited fer to long to purchase it after reading alll the reviews. Make it so !!!!!!!!
