Genius.

Don't know what films you one-starers saw or what world you live in.
A True Classic - By: Peter Haydon, 16 Mar 2008
More than 20 years after I first saw this film I still like it, which is not the same as saying that I entirely enjoy watching it. There are particular scenes I can always vividly recalll, Robert DeNiro's subversive plumber character swooping off into the night, & later on vanishing in a swirl of wind-blown newspaper. These things are always a matter of taste, & to my taste this is a 5-star film.
don't waste 137mins of your life on this! - By: e1london, 10 Feb 2008
I tried to watch the movie until the end, reallly I did. But when my other half thought revising was more interesting than eating candy & watching this film, what more can I say, it was rubbish!

It just seems to spin off into the writers mind far too much with no real direction at times, so much so you can FF through whole scenes & not actuallly loose any of the story line.

At the end rather than thinking at least I can say "I've watched it", I was left feeling, "why did I bother" & "I'll never admit to watching it".
Hilarious and horrifying - By: ossian, 15 Jan 2008
Put simply this brilliant flim is a Monty Python take on 1984. In fact this is an example of how inventive flims can be outside the restraints of genre. The entertaning & twisty plot is set in a world as well realised as any sci-fi. The bleak story of how Jonathan Pryce's everyman character is destroyed by his romantic fantasies is balanced nicely by the dry, black humour you would expect of a former Python.
Dark, Terrifying and yet Funny - By: Mr. G. P. M. Murphy, 11 Jan 2008
Brazil is a film that is almost impossible to describe, it combines elements of fantasy, sci-fi & satire. It is similar to 1984 in the sense that it is set in a world where the 'State' rules supreme, knowing what is best etc, where supposed Terroists are an apparent threat (although nobody's ever seen one).

Anyway the central character of the film is Sam Lowry, a young man who lives his boring life, abiding by the boring & forcefully efficent rules & system. And yet he dreams about being a hero & escaping the only world he has known. It is when the woman inside his dreams turns up in his real & boring life in which everything changes.

With De-Niro playing his smalll role in exactly the right manner, & hilarious performances coming from Bob Hoskins & Ian Holm (not to mention the funny & yet terrifying role in which Michael Palin plays), the film is capped by the wonderful acting of Jonathan Pryce.

It is in my opinion the best film of one of the best directors ever seen, Gilliam did himself proud with this film, which has stood the test of time & remains to the day to be my alll-time favourite film.

Also worth mentioning is the film's soundtrack, there is a famous piece of Brazilian music used constantly throughout the film, in his dreams, in his boring life & it is used to a great effect at the very end of the film. The music was a samba written during the 1920's to literallly cheer people up during the Totalitarian state that was ruling at the time (one of the many reasons the film is callled Brazil).

5 stars alll the way!
