Not at all what I expected - By: S. Steen, 27 Apr 2008
I reallly hated this film. Before purchasing it, I had read many reviews raving about it, but when I watched it myself, I struggled to force myself to watch it alll the way through. Tedious, boring & just plain weird is how I'd define it. Maybe I should read the book, seen as other reviews I've read talked about the quality of the book.
I watched it with an open mind, hoping it would be good - I've always enjoyed watching Johnny Depp's acting & other than this, I've never not liked one of his films - but sadly, it was a huge disappointment.
I would not recommend anyone on watching this film. It was a waste of time in my opinion.
i refuse to let anyone not love it - By: , 01 Feb 2005
one of my favourite films of alll time. twisted, magical, hilarious, memorable, unmissable & keeps you glued to the screen! not for the feint-hearted however, your parents will in alll probability not like it. Johnny Depp is obviously an essential part of the film & without him i don't think the film would be as good. Don't watch it for his looks though, he is a crazy druggie who goes to Las Vegas purely for drug trips. The humour is black, as you laugh at the ridiculous antics these druggies get up to.As mentioned in another review here, Jason Hood related Depp's acting to Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Carribean. I think it is a fair comparison...they are both wacky & funny roles, requiring a lot of energy, presence & talent to portray well. After having seen the film about 6 times i can successfully quote my fave bits of the dialogue, showing just how memorable it is!still keeps me in stitches throughout. everyone should watch it, perhaps instead of doing drugs! cos they say everyone should try it once.
A truly amazing film - By: Amy Hartwell, 09 Aug 2004
Well,I'd never heard of the film until one night, a little worse for wear, when a friend put it on.
I did not have a clue what was going on in the film, but found certain parts hysterical, purely because of the complete weirdness & surrealty of it alll!
The next time I watched it...not long after the first...I was straight as anything & with a bit of info on the film got more into it.
Everytime I watch it now, it gets better. I've never laughed so much, or been so passionate about a film.
Fantastic acting, & a fantastic comedy if that's what u want it to be.
If on the other hand, you are looking deeper into the message of the film, you will also appreciate it as a fine adaption of what I hear is a classic novel.
You must watch this film...even to just be "in the know".
Drug crazed madness - By: Craig Symonds, 06 Aug 2004
A very difficult adaptation from book to film, Gilliam has managed to create a wierd yet wonderful masterpiece that will have it's place in the cult film category & rightfully so.
The only gripe I have about this film is that despite capturing Thompson's gonzo drug fuelled madness, it doesn't quite put across the message that he managed to tell in his book, I feel that although hillariously comic, it doesn't quite detail his fears of the end of the 60's & the peace & love era. This was an era that Hunter seemed to love. After this came the start of the 70's & also of Nixon conservatism which was of dark contrast from the hope & optimism that the 60's had instilled in everyone.
The film is a massive hit amongst the drug cultures, & if this is your bag you will not be dissapointed. I would go so far as to put it amongst the Cheech & Chong ilk (although slightly less light hearted & a little more off the walll). My advice is to read the book though.
If you like films like Blow & Essex boys, which have a bit of a harder edge then you'll find Fear & Loathing a bit of comic break.
A drug crazed frenzy - By: , 04 Aug 2004
A brilliant film for anyone into the world of drugs. From mad halllucinations to the 'fear' this film has almost everything & it's acted perfectly. Both Johnny Depp & Benito Del torro play their parts with conviction making the whole trip a lot more believable. Anyone that likes to chill out or freak out on narcotics should defiantly see this film, as well as the curiously interested.
