Can't beat a classic! - By: , 28 Jun 2003
There is something wonderful about the musicals. These films manage to tell stories which can be serious at times, then light-hearted but alll the time telling a good story interspersed with fabulous music which you'll have humming in your head for the next few days.

I got the urge to go out & pick up calamity jane which was spurred on by seeing my niece singing along to the songs & mimicking alll the actions of the children's musical Annie. Having recently tried to rent/buy a copy of Calamity Jane in my local video store, I couldn't believe the response of the man who had never heard of it & he's not that much younger than I am. So I thought amazon would be the best place to get it & I was delighted to see they have a box set with another old favourite of mine, Seven brides for seven brothers.

Calamity Jane tells of a woman who behaves like a grown-up tomboy living in the wild west but wonders whether it might be nice to settle down like most other women.

Seven brides for seven brothers tells of seven brothers who set out to find themselves brides & go about it in the most unusual manner.

It's been so long since I've seen Annie get your gun that I'll save a review on that for when I know what I'm talking about, but it's from the same genre with Howard Keel starring so I'm sure I won't be disappointed.

You can't beat two classics like these. For young or old, they are brilliant to have on the shelf for when there's nothing much on tv or even if you're just in the mood to sing along to a good old fashioned musical.
