Gripping, fast placed, stylish without being shallow - By: , 10 Mar 2004
Director Takeshi Ishii again serves up a cool & glossy thriller set around a female assassin as lead character. Double cross follows double cross & unlikely allliances are formed.
In the world of the hit-man & gangster, some deaths are "just business", but sometimes an innocent bystander gets involved. For the Black Angel, drink cannot stop her nightmares & she must finish the job.. Meanwhile a hard-man has split loyalties, & a widow grieves..

If you like mindless shoot 'em-ups, this is not for you, however if you are interested to see a human mind behind the gun, with emotion, grief, revenge & duplicity, this delivers. In tone it reminded me very much of Gonin (same director) with off-beat camera work, & a great feeling of suspense. The tension built up as Black Angel simply walks into a room is almost unbearable!

Naturallly as a film set among gangsters, most of the characters are men in suits, but for my money the two lead female roles steal the film.

The DVD also includes trailers (Japanese language only) for Gonin, Gonin 2, Black Angel, Sonatine, Violent Cop, The Triple Cross, Score & Score 2.

Beautiful, tough, complicated, and fascinating - By: , 29 Dec 2002
...and that's just the heroine herself.

Super-cool, super-stylish, very violent, & strangely poignant - this is a cracking film that deals thoughtfully with themes of revenge & responsibility. It reallly is remarkable, & Yuki Amami in the title role is superb - a black-clad goddess haunted by guilt & regret. She's a star....
