this dvd recording is top class. John Eliot is an absolute genius & so genial with it. The players & singers are top drawer too & the rehearsal was an absolute delight throughout. JEG knows how to get the best out of the musicians & his understanding & interpretation of Bach's glorious music is surely unsurpassed?

... but 4 stars because I'd have liked to hear the final result! However, that probably isn't possible because, unlike the Cantata Pilgrimage performances, this was a studio recording. Nevertheless, you do get decent chunks of music, not to mention Gardiner's take on Bach & how he should be performed. Gardiner has a reputation as somewhat of a tartar to work for - he is a stickler for the tiniest detail, he wants what he wants, he wants it perfect & he wants it NOW. Nevertheless, it's interesting to see in the Monteverdi Choir faces from the famous San Marco Monteverdi Vespers recording of the late 1980s - he clearly inspires loyalty among his choir, even if not from Mark Bennett his lead trumpeter! One gets a glimpse into the world of a great musician & some insight into what makes such people tick. I am collecting the Cantata Pilgrimage series on Gardiner's own SDG label (SDG = Soli Deo Gloria (to the glory of God alone, how Bach signed his cantata scores), & not apparently "Sod Deutsche Grammophon" (which refused to release the whole series)). After this, I'll appreciate them that much more.
