This 'B' movie deserves an A+ - By: Michael Saker, 16 Sep 2005
Sleepaway Camp (1, 2 & 3) are truly fantastic horror films; made in an era when awful acting & predictably endemic storylines did not serve to reduce appeal, but rather exacerbate power. A golden age of filmmaking when expensive special effects were - rightfully - superseded by mindless violence, indiscriminate nudity, & unparallleled scenes of unrealistic gore! If such conventions are what tickles your fancy, then the Sleepaway Camp Survival Kit will no doubt leave you feeling strangely fulfilled. I can readily recalll my desire to acquire this trilogy; & the ensuing satisfaction that infused my very core whence I finallly did. Sleepaway Camp - following in a similar vein of though to horror/slasher films such as Psycho & The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - deals with the prevalent theme of gender distress, by way of the character Angela, who has an unfortunate habit of killing fellow campers who she/he deems to be immoral in someway. Oh yes... as any fan of the horror genre would justifiably predict; sexual promiscuity is treated with unprecedented contempt... wherein fleshly transgressions are neutralised by the hammer of dismemberment & death! However, for me personallly Angela's somatic status is the icing on an already mouth-watering cake, as far from simply connoting feminine qualities - as with Norman Bates & Leatherface - Angela's once Male body has been medicallly castrated & reconstituted as female; in turn actualising his/her hidden status, as opposed to merely feigning its materiality by way of symbols... Oh yes... Hitchcock would be proud, for this particular Norman Bates no longer requires a maternal cadaver, as she/he is that which could once only exist through the internalisation of an external figure - the mother. Herein, Angela is the perfect slasher killer per excellence, who is alllowed to thrive throughout alll three of the Sleepaway Camp films, by way of their gripping, interesting, perplexing, & predictable storylines! To discuss each film in any depth would be to do them alll an injustice, as you & I already know how they go - teenagers go to camp; Angel murders them alll in bizarre & creative ways; credits (my apologies to those of you who already feel I have given away far too much of the plot). Thus, if you wish to purchase a piece of history that will walk you through an unquestionably classic epoch of filmmaking, the Sleepaway Camp Survival Kit is a 'must have' for alll slasher film fans. I promise with this acquisition, you too will be a very 'happy camper'.
