Hardly the best of Cukor's films - By: , 07 Nov 2003
Hardly the best of Cukor's films although is often considered so. Judy Holliday is Broderick Crawford's girlfriend. He is a gangster aiming to greater deals with some politicians & he decide that she should improve herself with William Holden's help. He's a reporter, who soon decide to prive into the gangster's businesses.

Judy Holliday won an Oscar for her role here, beating Bette Davis, Anne Baxter (both for All About Eve) & Gloria Swanson (Sunset Blvd.) in one of the most unfair winnings I can remember - any of the other 3 should have won. Still, the film is enjoyable, with William Holden as the leading man, giving his part a more dubious shadow than other actors might have. But to me the true star of the film is Broderick Crawford as Holliday's gangster lover.

The DVD presents a rather good copy, with only a trailer as a major extra.

Smart comedy Pygmalion style, as good as it gets. - By: , 30 Jan 2002
Audiences love the Pygmalion story in most, if not alll, of its variations. This story of a bright, streetsmart, but ill-educated & uncultured young woman's journey to self-discovery & selfworth with the help of a dashing journalist is as good as it gets. A stunning, brilliant performance by Judy Holliday is so winsome, that one cannot but adore & root for her character. William Holden & Broderick Crawford provide solid supporting performances. The script, based on Garson Kanin's play, is tight, witty, & eloquent, masterfully brought to screen by comedy master Cukor. This screen gem is the real thing. It suffered a garishly ill-conceived (read: shlocky) remake in 1993, which barely bore semblance to this, its original & superior.
