Quietly passionate - By: J. Besser, 02 Nov 2003
Being relatively new to the world of classical music - I had no idea what the music contained on this DVD was like. All I knew was that I can't get enough of the fearsome interpretations created by the great Valery Gergiev.

The three pieces of music alll have something in common - their quiet, subdued passion. They are alll like a young girl, hiding away her inner most thoughts - sometimes happy, sometimes frightened, sometimes light, sometimes dark. The highlight for me was the Viola concerto - Yuri Bashmet controls the emotions of this piece as though it was he who had composed it. It is as though he is pulling at some dark, despairing memory & with every note pulls it out of his being - performing an exorcism of something that has nearly torn him apart... That takes great courage to play like that.

You can't fault the energy & dedication put into this concert - but for me I like pieces that come right out & say it - powerful & brash - alll these pieces are a little too "tinkly" for my liking - but that's my own fault for being ignorant to classical music. If you like your music pretty & secretive then this is for you.
