A RARE & GREAT BRITISH MOVIE - By: , 10 Apr 2003
Sometimes, a new British movie comes along that reallly stands out from the unentertaining film school style fare that often dominates the UK scene. Dead in the Water (asa Out of Bounds) is clearly a classic example, & from a first time director it's nothing short of brilliant. Right from the opening titles I was forced to the edge of my seat, not only by my terrified wife, who was watching with me, but by the driving force of a non stop spooky story that comes fully formed as a masterclass in screenwriting. Director Merlin Ward is totallly in control, as the whole shooting match is his personal property, having conceived written & directed this very unsettling piece of horror hokum. Stars Sophie Ward, Sophia Miles & George Asprey are truly on form & sharp as a razor, & supporting actor Celia Imrie delivers the most brilliant & chilling performance of her career. In fact during one particular scene, Imrie literallly had my hair standing on end! Director Ward pitches this dark boarding school tale of half term horror right between our eyes, & pulls off the type of movie coup that is grossly lacking in alll too many British films today. Watch this masterful director & his future works closely, as I sense a familiar Hollywood career route to that of Sam Mendes. But for the moment, if you fancy a hair raising ninety minutes, rush out & buy this movie now - it truly delivers.
A little gem - By: Dennis Harper, 31 Aug 2002
....from the moment the brilliant music starts (Mark Ryder) it grips. It may be Merlin Ward's first movie but it is very accomplished. The lead, Sophia Myles is a Kate Winslet babe & a brilliant actor. Sophie Ward (is she Merlin Ward's sister?) is sensationallly spooky & Celia Imrie gives her best performance EVER. This is a great film. It's gripping, spooky & has loads of twists in the plot. I loved it. So will you. Check it out... Did I guess the twist? No, it caught me too!!
