The Long Good Friday - By: papaya bueno, 22 Mar 2007
Watching this again after several years is like experiencing an episode of Life On Mars, only vastly superior. No need for flashbacks as we're actuallly there: with the clothes, the cars, the non-PC language & an undeveloped London Docklands. A time when gangsters had (supposedly) strict rules of behaviour & decency, & worked with corrupt police officials with little danger of media exposure. And although this is a violent, fairly realistic film, it alll has a strange feeling of innocence about it. If only they knew what was around the corner!
Add to this Barrie Keeffe's marvellous script, lots of dry humour (it's almost a black comedy), Bob Hoskin's loveable villain, Helen Mirren as his upper class moll, & early appearances from Pierce Brosnan (hardly speaking, but wonderfully nasty), Gillian Taylforth & Eddie Constantine - & you have 109 minutes of pure pleasure. A lingering final sequence will stay in your memory. Unreservedly recommended.
Best British film ever ever ever - By: Alan Gregory, 02 Sep 2005
First saw this film over 20 years ago. Still as good now as it was then, if not better because of its 80's realism. Hoskins plays the lead with pace & panache which moves the film along at tremondous speed. The brutality is not out of place yet in places it softness balances this out. Some critics have said the music score is dated, but can you reallly have a film from 1981 without a synth. Watch & enjoy.

The Long Good Friday - By: , 01 Sep 2003
The Long Good Friday is possibly the best British Gangster film of alll time. Only Get Carter (1971) can compete in the same league. Bob Hoskins portrays the part of the London Gangster superbly. With a strong cast, this film had alll the makings of a winner. There have since been many british gangster films ie. Snatch, Lock Stock, Sexy Beast etc but for me this film will always be the greatest gangster film ever made.
The Best British Gangster Movie - By: Mr. J. C. Healy, 01 May 2003
Long before Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels existed the quintesential (and still the best) british gangster movie. Bob Hoskins in his finest role desparately hanging on to power in east end London.
The pace, the plotting alll leading up to a stunning ending. Buy it, watch it, love it!
