excellent film, let down only by the doll-like faces - By: Dr. Mike Goldsmith, 11 Aug 2008
This only bears a passing resemblance to the original Metropolis film, & is much more similar to Bladerunner. The visuals, music & action are alll excellent, the only let-down is the ways the characters' faces are depicted - too caricatured & doll-like to either relate to or to show any but the most basic emotions - which is a real pity as the characters themselves are strong & interesting. Well worth watching anyway!
WARNING!! WARNING!! DO NOT BE DECEIVED BY THE POSITIVE REVIEWS! - By: James Kibirige, 03 Mar 2008
Ladys & Gentlemen this film is seriouse & severe garbage, the kind of garbage that can knock a man into a coma. THE REVEIWERS HERE ARE LIARS!!!! BIG FAT LIARS!! PLAIN AND SIMPLE. Seriously this film is that bad it is so, so, so BAD. The story is ludacris with terrible characters & a plot that doesn't make much sense. this is officiallly the worst anime of alll time I cannot believe I wasted my money on this diarrhea please, PLEASE, PLEASE AVOID THIS LIKE THE BUBONIC PLAGUE.
Good but not great - By: Andy Taylor, 21 Jan 2008
I can't place my finger on it, but there's something lacking in this film. The animation is beautiful, the selection of music is brilliant (I read a comment someone else had made about the selection of music for the big scene near the end of the film & couldn't agree more), & there's nothing particularly wrong with the story, but somehow it alll seems to lack that spark that usuallly defines great anime.

All in alll I'd say it's a film that's well worth watching, but mainly for the artistic beauty rather than enterntainment value.
Big Noses - By: DangermouseZilla, 12 Jan 2008
Impressive backgrounds & an ambitious story should ensure this film is up there with the likes of Akira - but it isn't.

The characters seem like they belong more in a serialised childs cartoon. There is a degree of loyalty to the original Manga series - but decisions were made to remove some of the more fantastical elements from the original (such as flying & sex-change) in order to give it a more realistic feel. Given that these were dropped, I'd have thought a less 'kids cartoon' style would have been better for the characters - what's with the massive noses?

The characters never reallly seemed to get interesting, the emotional side to the story was so important but it wasn't given the attention it deserved. It left me wanting to see the film to the end in order to see what happened, but I didn't reallly care much about what happened to the characters except for Tima the robot.

I'll not bleat on anymore about this, so, in a nutshell: Some fantastic backgrounds, a dystopian future, a resurrection of a 50 year old Manga series - but one which doesn't capture the magic it should have. For fans of the film though this will be a great DVD, complete with a second disk of extras including a 'making of' documentary.

Best example of music in film - By: Philip Court, 14 Mar 2007
This is my first review. It is'nt even reallly a review. This film is rather good & the animation is charming but what reallly sets it apart from other anime's & other films in general is the song selection of Ray Charles' "I can't stop loving you" in the final dramatic scene. I have yet to find a better example of music & images together. It's just class. See it just for this. I am not overexaggerating.
