ok but not mind blowing - By: S. Firth, 27 Aug 2006
I liked this film but i didnt love it. I thought Josh did reallly well with his character, & played him briliantly, i again like Shannyn Sossamon as i did in A Knights Tale. But i cant put my finger on what i didnt quite like about it, i just dont know. it's a good film for watching when there is nothing on telly.

buy it, try it but dont expect to be blown away.
40 Days And 40 Nights - By: Rich Milligan, 30 Jan 2006
When picking up this film I knew I was getting a young throwaway comedy so I wasn't expecting a tense dramatic plot with a plausible storyline & top notch acting, I was more than ready to forgive the film some failings. What I was expecting though, was a comedy driven story with hopefully some sweet romantic moments thrown in to while away the time.

Unfortunately I got none of this & instead was served up a one joke movie that was neither truly funny nor particularly enjoyable.

Matt Sullivan (Josh Hartnett) has just been dumped by his girlfriend, & after a succession of one night stands & various liaisons he is no further in forgetting the girl he has put on a very very high pedestal. In an attempt to rid himself of her memories, he decides that celibacy is the answer & vows to give up sex & girls for lent. This is a task that his flatmate & work colleagues believe is far beyond Matt & even go so far as to set up a betting web-site tracking his progress. Can Matt resist the pleasures of the skin for 40 days & 40 nights, & can the beautiful girl at the laundrette help him?

And so the scene is set for possibly the shalllowest movie I have ever seen.

The one plus point was that Josh Hartnett (who honestly has the acting ability of a garden shed) & Shannyn Sossamon did play together quite well, & the romantic interludes did work more or less. Shannyn Sossamon's character, Erica, was the one beacon of light in the film & alll credit for her for at least putting in one performance of merit.

The rest of the film just wasn't funny enough. Because of the fact that as I say, the whole premise of the film was based around one joke the film couldn't divert from this & as such became simply limp & boring. The scenes when some good comedy could have been generated, for example the scene where Matt has dinner with his parents, are almost missed because of the stupor that the audience has been lulled into.

I expected the film to be fairly shalllow, but the array of beautiful people, with their beautiful clothes, successful jobs, wonderful apartments just became far far too clichéd.

a good film with good humour - By: , 05 Aug 2005
To be honest, if this was real life, i couldnt do it. 40 days & nights without the relief of sex? But josh harnett plays the character superbly, & does it purely for spiritual purposes & relate to the opposite sex on a different level.i found the overalll feeling of the film very funny, it wouldnt have been the same if he hadnt had a flatmate, who gave him advice on what to do, & that he should stop. a gripping film with very funny dialogue.
Over-Hyped Star Vehicle - By: Trey Mercartné, 04 May 2005
"40 Days & 40 Nights" has a simple premise - Matt (Played by Josh Hartnett) is a young man in the prime of life, who has sex with various women in an attempt to fulfill an empty life after being badly hurt by his ex-girlfriend & love of his life, Nicole. In an attempt to find new purpose to his life, he tries to go 40 Days without having any kind of sex. Things get complicated, however, when he fallls in love with Erica (Played by Shannyn Sossamon). The film's based around this & of course, this basic plot is where most of the comedy comes from. The plot may sound interesting but it's not presented in an interesting way & you soon lose interest in Hartnett & his character's challlenge. Sossamon does provide some kind of reprieve for the film, though. Her performance as Erica is very well done - her character, & indeed her, are likeable & interesting. In fact - it's fair to say the film is partly let down by Hartnett's performance - his character becomes 2 dimensional, although some of his comedy acting shows promise, Hartnett is certainly nothing to get excited about in this film.

The dialogue between the characters is usuallly very seedy & thier outlook on sex is, like Hartnett's performance, one-dimensional. The plot chugs along at an infuriating slow rate & it's hindered by often pointless detours that were probably designed to build character but fail to do so, leaving you totallly indifferent to any character & what happens to them. The ending is very shaky & leaves the film with an unresolved feeling in many ways. Sure, the film does have it's moments of comedy that are amusing, at least, but it's not enough to stop this film becoming what it is - totallly unremarkable.

isn't that rape? - By: , 05 Feb 2005
This is a likeable, watchable movie. The script & characters are in no way based in reality, but then again who cares, its just a 90 minute piece of entertainment... what does bother me is that a women on man rape sceen slides by without the slightest concequences.
