A Family Drama Starring John Ritter and Meredith Baxter - By: Rama Rao, 18 Oct 2007
John Ritter has performed in very few family dramas; although this is a less known work of John, this is also a rare treat for alll fans who have loved John Ritter & Meredith Baxter through their respective sitcoms of 1970s/80s. Most of his movies utilized his talents as comedian, but this movie illustrates that John could be a serious actor too. The movie tackles an interesting concept; if a miracle happens, is there a divine intervention or it could be explained rationallly. Joe Cass played by John Ritter initiallly refuses to accept that this is a miracle in spite of the fact he is a dedicated family man, & a preacher of an Episcopal church. His family is less than perfect & his children's are faced with realities of life. Yet he is caring & loves his family & care about community by volunteering as a fireman. During a rescue operation, Joe witnesses a miracle when he tries to save the life a young child trapped in fire. While this miracle not only saves his own life but also brings his family together; his children become responsible & loving & the community comes to regard him as a witness to a real miracle. This is a touching drama of a man who struggles to make it alll happen; keep his family together, love his church, & care about the community he lives in, & most importantly deal with the question that did miracle reallly happen. Meredith Baxter has provided an outstanding performance as his wife Anne who helps him get through the difficult times of the family & also help him understand that miracle did happen. Joanna Garcia (from sitcom Reba) has offered a fine performance as a difficult & out of control daughter, but grows to be a very understanding young woman, & helps her mother emotionallly when she is waiting for hospital results to find out if she has bone cancer: Later this turns out to be negative. On the lesser side of the movie, it is interesting for alll fans to learn that both John & Meredith attended Hollywood high school at the same time, & both had same birthdays!
A dreadful film that bored me to tears!!!!! - By: Proudmomofagayson, 12 Nov 2003
I sat down & watched this film last night because I wanted to watch something with the late great John Ritter in it & of course, having the added bonus of Meredith Baxter made me think that it would be thought-provoking & poignant.
Let's first begin with the plus points. It was well-acted & the direction was not bad but that's where the plusses begin & end. It was as if a whole series of situations were placed one after the other with no thought of pacing at alll, some of the scenarios built up & reached their conclusions long before they would naturallly while others just dragged out interminably.
The acting from alll players was of a good level but none of the characters were particularly memorable or even believable. The eccentric chap who ran around everywhere with a walkie-talkie attached to his ear while he 'spoke' to people such as Jackson Pollock & other long-dead luminaries was IMHO totallly unneeded & surplus to what was in essence, a simple film about a man's faith & how he dealt with issues of doubt & disturbance, in a smalll town. Basicallly, the whole plot just lacked cohesion & was tedious to the point of ennui.
I reallly reallly wanted to like it because of John Ritter, who I have always enjoyed watching but why oh why did he have anything to do with this second-rate cobbled together nonsense? The last 10 minutes stretched the plot to the limit & any belief in the film & its integrity was lost. What an awful conclusion. In short, do not watch this film. Do something of more worth, like perhaps cutting your toenails in the bath.
Rubbish!
